Ron Howard is a legend in the film industry, and just so happens to be making a film for Continental Studios. His film has a cut ready to be screened, so Matt Remick and the rest of his team gather in a screening room to see a cut of Ron Howard’s new film. The screening goes well, and Matt and the rest of the team love it as they think the film is just a 2-hour action film. But, there was an additional 45-minute motel sequence that was not working for anyone. Sal, Quinn, and Maya all agree that the motel sequence stinks and that Matt needs to give Ron Howard a studio note to cut the motel sequence from the movie. Matt hesitantly agrees with his team, but the moment Ron Howard shows up to his office, Matt doesn’t give Ron the studio note. Matt insists on being the most talent-friendly studio head in Hollywood.
With Matt refusing to give Ron the studio note, Quinn elects to step up and give Ron the note. But once she sees Anthony Mackie in the studio with Ron, she freezes and does not give the note. Matt goes to Patty for help in this situation, but she tells him not to give Ron the note, due to the motel sequence being symbolism for Ron letting go of the cousin that passed away at a young age. Matt uses this information to force Sal to create a fake story about having a dead cousin, as a way to sympathize with him about cutting the motel sequence. Once Sal attempts to converse with Ron about cutting the sequence, he ultimately doesn’t due to hearing how much the sequence means to Ron. This causes Anthony Mackie to go to Matt and his team to let them know that even he hates the motel sequence and has been waiting for Matt to tell Ron to cut it from the movie.
Matt, his team, Ron, and Anthony Mackie are all gathered in a boardroom to discuss marketing strategies regarding the film. Ron suggests centering the marketing around the motel sequence, which leads Matt to ask Ron to speak with him after the meeting. Ron Howard notices right away that Matt is attempting to give him a studio note and begins mocking Matt for the time he was at a screening for A Beautiful Mind. Matt gave a note informing the audience that Paul Bettany’s character is imaginary throughout the film in advance. Matt is infuriated by Ron mocking him, causing the whole boardroom to laugh at him, which fuels Matt to finally give Ron the studio note on the spot. Chaos ensues after Matt vehemently lets Ron know how everyone feels about the motel sequence. In the end, Ron and Matt have a heart-to-heart reconciliation as Ron agrees to cut the motel sequence from the film as it just did not fit.
We are treated to another hilarious episode of this series, which gives a satirical insight into life working at a studio and with talent. The long takes and different camera movements continue to provide the sense of chaos that is working in a Hollywood studio. The episode does a great job illustrating who Matt really is at the heart, a cinephile. We see from Matt’s perspective why he has the mindset he does, as he comes from more of a cinephile mindset instead of a “studio head”. The writing of this series continues to be top-notch by giving the audience laugh-out-loud moments throughout the episode, while also conveying at the same time the art and love that goes into making movies with studios. Ron Howard delivers gold in his performance as himself, as the series does a great job satirically showing how much every scene means to a director when they shoot said scenes. This series continues to deliver on a high level in every way through its wonderful screenplay and direction. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen deliver with another hilarious bang of an episode that no studio head should ever want to cut.
