Review: ‘The Pitt’ Season 2, Episode 9 “3:00 PM”

Previously on HBO Max’s The Pitt, the staff begins doing everything the “old school” way, unable to use technology. Robby, Whitaker, and Dr. Jack Abbot are hands-on with a new patient, Howard. Meanwhile, Frank and Santos assist a young woman who bit her tongue while intoxicated. Surprisingly, Javadi and Ogilvie work really well together as they team up to check on a patient.

The episode begins with a young boy, Jude, whose hand is wounded by a firecracker. Robby, Santos, and Javadi take the lead, with Princess’s assistance. We see a calmer, gentler side of Santos with Jude, calming him during his procedure.

Dr. King takes a break before her deposition. But before she can relax, she finds out her sister Becca is in the waiting area. She finds Becca and learns she has a stomachache. Before she can start checking her, King is called for her deposition, so Frank takes over.

McKay and Whitaker have a patient, Amaya, with PCOS, who comes in with pain in her abdomen. Her pain gets worse as time goes on. Unfortunately, the only way to stop the pain is to have surgery, removing one of her ovaries. Along with that, McKay’s other patient, Roxie, is still experiencing pain.

One of Javadi’s patients codes when she and Whitaker come to check on her. Javadi freezes and is shaken by almost losing her patient because of a clerical error. After Robby assists with saving the woman’s life, they learn that she needs surgery immediately because Javadi failed to accurately document the radiology orders on the whiteboard, which is very important.

Robby and Santos find out that Jude has alcohol in his system and inform his sister when she comes in. When Robby tells her that they will have to contact CPS, she freaks out. Later on, she tells them that their parents were deported to Haiti, so it’s just the two of them.

Later, Dr. Jack Abbot returns to the ER with the overweight patient, Howard. They sent him to prep for surgery. Frank and Whitaker assist. Jack becomes slightly uncomfortable as Howard learns from Garcia that without surgery, there’s a major possibility that he could die. He wants to call his sister first, but Garcia tells him there’s no time. Jack lets Howard call her.

McKay visits Roxie, who’s all alone in her room. Roxie has accepted that she’s going to die, but is still scared, so McKay comforts her.

Before Jack takes a break before his actual shift starts, he says goodbye to Robby in case they don’t see each other before Robby leaves for his trip. Jack tells him, “You just make sure you come back. And if it gets dark, you call me.” Robby doesn’t say anything; just taps him on the shoulder before walking away. As we know, Robby has been on a hard path with his mental health.

Next, we see Robby questioning Whitaker in the breakroom about spending time with his former patient’s wife, Amy. Whitaker tells him that he’s just been helping her out and that it’s nice to be on her farm. Then, Robby asks him to house-sit while he’s away, and Whitaker accepts.

Donnie takes his patient to the waiting room and learns about a mass casualty event at a water park, meaning the Pitt will become even more hectic once those victims come in.

Overall, this was a good episode, although it felt short. It was nice to see the soft side of Santos again, which brings up Isa Briones amazing acting. It was emotional to see Howard talking to his sister on the phone, and also with Jack’s reaction to Garcia telling Howard the full truth about possible outcomes. Patrick Ball did an amazing job as well in this episode as Frank, being gentle and considerate with Dr. King’s sister, Becca. Having the one-on-one with Jack and Robby was important, knowing how much Robby has struggled, and Jack being an anchor for him. It just shows how strong their friendship is. Only time will tell what will happen when the casualties from the water park arrive.
