Review: ‘The Pitt’ Season 2, Episode 5 “11:00 AM”

Previously on HBO Max’s The Pitt, we learned that Javadi is “internet famous” on TikTok, after a patient comes in asking Frank Langdon for a “Doctor J.” Dana tells Robby she needs them to make up before the shift is over.

Throughout the episode, Robby is visibly annoyed with Frank. His frustration comes out when he sees a returning patient, a woman whose ankle is inflamed. They take her to trauma room two. Jesse and Baran are in the room during the examination when the patient’s boss calls.  They overhear the boss threatening to fire her, so Robby snatches the phone and threatens that if he does, she will sue him, and Robby will testify.

They get a few more patients, one a convict who was violently attacked. Whitaker and Mel lead as Baran and Samira assist. After running tests, they prep him for surgery.

McKay, Princess, and Javadi have a patient who fell after experiencing a seizure; her husband is with her. She has cancer, and they’re able to keep her comfortable. There’s swelling and bruising on her leg, near the ankle. She has a death doula.

Samira’s patient, Orlando, isn’t eligible for PENNIE or the hospital’s charity care, which makes them upset since they can’t afford health insurance. Orlando apologizes to his daughter Ana for lashing out at her for creating a GoFundMe account to help pay the medical bills. Fortunately, they plan to move him from the ICU to MedSurg, which will lessen his overall bill. The hospital will establish a payment plan with him.

Stressed about completing her charting, Santos must babysit Ogilvie as the test results of their coughing patient reveal Tuberculosis. Santos orders Ogilvie to sign in as a patient so that he can be tested since he was near the patient.

Later, Frank’s patient goes into septic shock, so they have someone from surgery come in. He is fresh out of medical school, and Robby immediately orders him to get someone more experienced. Garcia ends up coming down, taking over.

One patient is severely constipated. They cannot do an enema, so Santos has Ogilvie learn a different way, being guided by Whitaker. As Ogilvie makes progress, the patient makes a bowel movement, hitting Ogilvie before Whitaker can tell him to back up.

Whitaker and Frank’s patient, Louie, codes, and Frank rushes in. Robby immediately comes inside and assists. He yells for Perlah, needing a crash cart for intubation.

Overall, this was a good episode. There wasn’t a lot of action, per se, but there were some patients with interesting concerns, between Santos and Ogilvie’s bowel patient and Jesse’s inflamed ankle patient. Isa Briones has been incredible with her role as Santos, who has been stressed out during the whole first half of her shift. It was like deja vu when Ogilvie experienced his bowel patient, as we all know Whitaker had many moments like that in season 1. What’s to come for the next episode?
