Review: ‘The Pitt’ Season 2, Episode 3 “9:00 AM”

Previously on The Pitt, tension continues between Dr. Al-Hashimi and Dr. Robby while trying to work together. Frank reveals to Mel why he was absent from work for a while, telling her about his addiction and his rehabilitation. Javadi learns that the new student, Ogilvie, is her competition, prompting them to go tit-for-tat when questioned during procedures. Santos still believes that her young patient, Kylie, is being abused by her father, but hasn’t been able to come to any conclusion yet, waiting upon the father’s arrival.

The episode begins with the young man being wheeled into the ER on a stretcher. Javadi and Mel try to help Robby and Baran assist the EMTs in calming the patient down. The patient, Jackson, keeps yelling at them while also yelling out random numbers. Shortly after he gets situated in a room, a campus security guard comes inside, telling them that  Jackson threw a chair and must be on some type of drug. As the test results disprove this theory, the security guard is questioned by hospital security.

After talking to Kylie, Dylan comes back to tell Santos that there’s nothing suspicious about Kylie’s father and their relationship. Dylan tells her that they’ll find out about the dad when he shows up, but Santos doesn’t think he will.

They get two new patients, both involved in an auto accident— one on a motorcycle and a couple, the Yees,  in a car. The motorcyclist has no chance of survival, so they focus on helping Mr. Yee. He and his wife had a heated argument before the accident.

McKay’s patient, Mr. Williams’ test results come back and he receives the news that he has a tumor in his brain. McKay does her best to motivate him to give them the okay to do a removal procedure. His ex-wife shows up as his emergency contact, and they tell her about the tumor.

Kylie’s father makes it to the hospital. Things immediately take a turn when Dylan and Santos begin asking the father questions regarding Kylie’s bruises. He yells at them and his girlfriend until Dana hands Santos a tablet with Kylie’s test results. They learn that it’s just ITP. Kylie will have to stay in the hospital for a few days during treatment to make sure everything goes smoothly. While the abuse allegations were false, the father’s girlfriend breaks up with him for not trusting her with Kylie.

Robby has a patient who comes in for a burn. The two of them share a belief of Judaism. The woman tells him about her fear of fireworks— the sound being triggering for her as a survivor of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in 2018.

Samira pulls Robby when Mr. Yee comes back from his testing. What they initially thought was permanent paralysis turned out to be hypokalemic periodic paralysis, brought on by an extreme amount of potassium in his cells. Suddenly, Ms. Yee passes out, with Robby finding a wound on the side of her stomach. They immediately send her into surgery to stop internal bleeding from her spleen. After Mr. Yee’s procedure and he’s settled in his room, he has Dana record a video for him— an apology for his wife.

The episode ends with Dana getting a phone call. They must prepare for a code black as another hospital’s patients are headed to their ER.

Overall, this really wasn’t a chaotic episode, besides the beginning with  Jackson on the stretcher, and Kylie’s father and his girlfriend arguing in the hallway. It was a sad episode, with one stand-out scene being Robby’s Jewish patient, who was afraid of the sound of fireworks. When television shows bring up real-life events, it makes the episode more vulnerable and relatable, bringing back memories for those watching at home. Katherine LaNasa’s Dana was in this episode a lot, being a part of many scenes. It’s always entertaining to see her wit and sarcasm. Now that they will be hands-on with the code black, it’s only a matter of time before the PTMC becomes even busier.
