Review: ‘The Pitt’ Season 2, Episode 1 “7:00 A.M.”

The Emmy-winning series The Pitt has returned for the second season, bringing along familiar faces: Noah Wyle, Taylor Dearden, Katherine LaNasa, Patrick Ball, Shawn Hatosy, Fiona Dourif, Gerran Howell, and many more. The last season was filled with lots of chaos and drama, and it’s been hinted that this season will bring even more.

The episode begins with Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch heading to the hospital on his motorcycle. Robby walks into the ER, the waiting room already filled and crowded with many patients. There’s a plaque on the wall, a memorial for the lives lost from the casualties of the Pittfest mass shooting from last season. Robby checks on his first patient with Perlah and Dr. Shen. He makes his rounds before going to the desk to get himself situated and ready for his shift.

Victoria Javadi and Whitaker are collaborating on a practice procedure, along with Jesse and some new faces. Their attending, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, gives them all a hard time, with their “patient” dying. While she’s lecturing them, Robby comes inside, introducing himself to her. The seemingly butt heads as Baran will be Robby’s replacement as he prepares to go on a sabbatical.

Robby sees Dr. Frank Langdon for the first time in ten months, across the hall, and tries to avoid him, but Frank goes over to him. Their conversation is awkward, and Robby tries to avoid discussing their tension from last season. Frank apologizes for everything he’s said and done, but Robby just tells him that they can talk later.

Dana helps out the new RN student, Emma Nolan, giving her the ins and outs on the floor. She also gives her advice on how to treat patients and her colleagues.

While treating his frequent patient, Louie, Frank tells him that he stole his medicine and about his addiction. Frank’s been doing rehab and going to counseling. Before he can say anything else, Lupe pulls him to the side. He sees Donnie holding a baby, and Lupe tells Frank that someone left the baby in the bathroom.

Santos notices Mel’s vibe is off. Mel tries to whisper, telling her that today’s a deposition of a malpractice lawsuit that she was named in. Santos tells her not to worry.

Perlah and Santos visit their young patient, Kylie, and notice bruising all over her body. They ask her questions about her father and then take her for a urine test to ask more intimate questions. Kylie says nothing’s happened. Santos grabs the urine test, noticing blood inside.

Dr. McKay’s dealing with a patient, Mr. Williams, who complains of knee pain. As the appointment progresses, she notices his somewhat violent tendencies and confusion. She has one of the male medical assistants stand by the door, just as a precaution.

The first episode closes with Baran checking on the baby, where Samira and Jesse have been watching over. Baran freezes and becomes silent when Samira shows her the baby’s CBC.

Overall, this was a good episode— a chaotic beginning to a long shift. It will be interesting to see the interactions between Frank and Robby, as well as between him and Santos. There are some new faces, but it’s also good to see the familiar ones. It’s good to see that Dana didn’t quit. It’s exciting that this show is finally back. What will happen now that the first hour of the shift is over?
