Review: ‘The Paper’ Season 2, Episode 9 “Who’s Marv Marving?”

Ned pitches his “Glass Club” investigative series to Marv to rectify for TTT’s rising number of unsubscribers alluded to at the top of Episode 3, “Hearst’s Mistress.” Marv approves.

Nicole gossips with Mare about Detrick denying their situationship. Nicole baits Mare about her relationship with Ned by asking Mare to ask someone (other than Lisa) in HR about her relationship with Detrick.

“I think it would matter to you if the person you’re dating starts denying it,” Nicole pointedly tells Mare.

Mare catches the heat after Nicole opens the floodgates of rumors that Mare allegedly started sleeping with someone that possibly works at the office. This spooks Mare, who calls Ned about a rumor that she and Marv are sleeping together, as it would jeopardize the legitimacy of her job in the face of just receiving the greenlight for her first story at the Cincinnati Chronicle.

In other words, “Marv is Marving Mare,” according to Esmeralda.

Ned remains unsympathetic to Mare’s concerns, saying he and Mare should get ahead of the rumor by admitting their relationship.

“Yeah, still not really a good look for me to have slept with my former boss, you know?” Mare asks, perturbed by his suggestion.

Marv and the secret “Glass Club” formed by Ned in the previous episode infiltrate the exclusive, invite-only Glass [Country] Club to investigate the mysterious death of a waiter there. Unbeknownst to them, Esmeralda has also infiltrated the country club by escorting an affluent elderly man because of the rumors about Mare that plant the idea that she could sleep her way back into reclaiming her office.

Anne concocts several contradicting rumors about with whom Mare engages in an affair, which reaches Mare in Cincinnati. Her staff confront her, although Mare has a better job at dissolving rumors about their relationship than Ned, who admitted their relationship to Detrick, Travis, and Oscar.

She calls Ned to confront him about his executive decision to disclose their relationship without her consent. They effectively break up.

Jon Lovitz as Todd remains comically underutilized for a Saturday Night Live and NBC veteran that recently joined the ensemble.
