Review: ‘The Paper’ Season 1, Episode 6 “Churnalism”

Our cold opening involves Travis talking about loading boxes into a truck, where Ned suddenly bikes in, and frantically gets into the restroom. We then cut to Ned and the rest of the Truth Tellers trying to figure out ideas for stories, when he asks Esmerelda if she has any ideas about what to write about, and she suggests a Korean beauty company who says their face masks are the best. Ned pitches his story, where he says the public bathrooms at the place he usually goes to are being replaced by an e-bike kiosk. This turns out to be a lesson about churnalism, and Ken suddenly buts in and starts talking about his childhood friend Douglas Kean, and that the clickbait articles bring them money.

Ned says they can write about the health products, but they are going to do a truthful review article about them, and he gives Esmerelda the bathroom story. Ned walks in with buckets full of free products sent to them by a company to review, and everyone picks their own poison. Mare is sent to Esmerelda by Ned to be her kind of personal assistant for the story. Ken uses this as an opportunity to give Adam a family business medicine, which turns out to be a male booster.

We then see the effects of the different devices and medicines on some of the other employees. Esmerelda makes a call to a guy named Frank Durham, to talk about the bathrooms being closed down, and unsuccessfully so. Mare tells Esmerelda they need to get quotes from park guests, and go to tell Ned, who is wearing the blue face mask.

Ned winds up getting a zoom call meeting with Marv and a man named Dan. He talks to them with no camera, until he’s forced to turn it on. After some more negative events with the products, Esmerelda and Mare are asking a lady about the meetings for the Mcgundry public bathrooms. Esmerelda, with her hunch about the Frank guy, starts asking questions about his wealth and pretends to get a migraine to walk off to get more info. Mare plays along and distracts the lady with mundane conversation.

Outside the building, Mare tells the crew to give some space, takes off her mic, and makes Esmerelda do the same, and then they begin arguing. After Ken talks with Adam, Esmerelda shows Mare a picture she took of the calendar, and Mare notices that there is no meeting on the 13th, and that Frank was lying. Ned calls Mare to check in (with a filter on) and they tell him what they found.

The next scene shows how everyone was doing with their products, and to no surprise, it’s not going so well. Ned then goes to extremes, and takes multiple medicines and subpar health products at once. Mare and Esmerelda followed Frank, and Mare goes undercover to talk to him. Esmerelda is watching to see what’s happening, when Ned with his unhealthy look walks in and asks why she texted him the location and time. For this next scene, the film crew asked the employees to continue filming their wellness and their experiences with the health products at home.

Mare then successfully catches Frank in his lie. We then have a sort of update on how everyone did with their product articles, and Mare and Ned are shown talking about the story, and how Esmerelda helped. Esmerelda gets caught in her lie about Mare being asexual. When Ned confronts Esmerelda, Mare says she’s more annoyed that Ned believed it without any kind of proof.

So far, this was the best episode in the season. It still wasn’t a chuckle or a laugh out loud or anything, but there were some more smiles exchanged at the jokes. This gives something to look forward to for the next few episodes remaining, but it of course can still wind up going downhill.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
