Review: ‘The Lowdown’ Season 1, Episode 4 “Short on Cowboys”

To start, we have Dale Washberg giving us a little advice, and some Washberg family history, and a bit of his story. This story talk transitions to Lee and Francis, who are reading and examining the notes from the books in the diner. Francis hands over a note that talks about Dale’s dog barking in the night (his first line of defense) and saw assassins outside, who he shot at to scare away, the skinheads.  Also, it shows that Dale was aware that his wife Betty Jo was in on it, and how she was becoming colder in recent times, and didn’t react much to the news of the assassins. Finally, Donald apparently said something horrible to Dale that set him off, and apparently Betty Jo would know what it was.

As Lee and Francis are trying to figure this stuff out, Lee’s ex Samantha comes in, to take Francis to school. Samantha sends Francis to the car, and she tells Lee that Johnathan asked her to marry him, and she said yes. After we see Allen at an AA meeting, somebody outside the bookstore sells Lee a drawing of Dale Washberg, and mentions reading his article, and says he knows it’s not his fault he killed himself. When Lee questions him about how he knows Dale, he says he doesn’t and walks off. Elijah pays Lee a visit while on shrooms, and tells him that Donald Washberg is suing the Heartland Press, and filing a restraining order.

Betty Jo heads out of the house, and Lee starts to follow her unsuccessfully, and they wind up going to a restaurant to talk. Once they have the talk, Lee offers to take Betty Jo for a drink, and Allen stops by Bertie’s house, and mentions about Lee’s previous visit. After Lee and Betty hit it off at the bar, they head to her house, where they hang out some more, mentioning how she found Dale’s dead body after he shot himself in the night, and Lee eventually confronts her on her bullshit. Betty then tells him the fight wasn’t about land, and it was about Pearl actually being Donald’s daughter. The next morning, Lee and Betty talk about who might have killed Dale, and Donald is coming back from his run, and stumbles upon Lee heading out of the home, and then Allen gets shot.

Still not very entertaining, and just ok of a show. You may have had a moment with the gun going off scene toward the last bit of the episode, but it wasn’t like a super funny moment, more like an internal chuckle. Still kind of boring, but not horrible, and overall, this episode didn’t feel like it improved much compared to the last episode.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
