Episode 4 reveals how intricate Taryon Darrington is to our heroes journey as Vox Machina arrives to his home of Deastok. Here, Taryon reunites with his father, Howard Darrington, a businessman who values his wealth of absconded artifacts more than his own son. We quickly see that Taryon’s adventure quest is a cry for approval from his judgmental father.
Eventually, the group learns the shadow stone is mined on the Darrington’s land, with the father selling the powerful gem to the highest bidder. As the twins, Keyleth and Pike allow Trayon to lead them to the mines, Grog joins Percy to entertain Howard as a distraction. Here, we see just how devious the elder Harrington is during a game with a Deck of Infinite Possibilities. His appetite for chaos is insatiable as long as he profits.
The rouge doesn’t last long and a battle ensues. Taryon finally stands up to his father, vowing to rehabilitate the Darrington name. And Pike has a vision of a past battle.
Episode 4 rounds the best qualities of the show with timely comedy and fantastical action. One can’t help but root for Taryon, as he comes out from the shadow of his father’s lies. His familial trauma makes him right at home with the Vox Machina gang. It also is another example of a truth being revealed for a character, a narrative theme being seeded this season.
While Taryon’s truth about his family was simpler to unearth, it speaks to the harm in inheriting beliefs without question. He blindly believed his father, as a son would, thinking a loved one wouldn’t inflict them with any harm. It’s the perfect segue to a much greater question that awaits our characters. What “truth” have they been blindly devoted to, what harm has it caused and whose blood is on their hands?
