Episode 1 begins with Gracie watching Jeopardy, eating and getting makeup before talking to her husband Edward, who is eventually forced to hang up. Later that night, we see a creature attacking Gracie. We then meet Sam and his family, who are bringing him to the Boroughs.
After arriving, the transition manager Kayleigh shows them the house, much to the dismay of Sam, who doesn’t really want to be there. After everyone leaves, Sam settles in and meets one of his neighbors, Jack. After a conversation, Jack invites Sam to a barbecue. The next morning, after we meet Art and his wife Judy, Sam drives off to try and talk to the man at the top, Mr. Shaw. After that doesn’t work, we then see the security guards going to speak with Renee.
She tells them a bag of rose quartz was stolen. The security guards don’t end up doing anything about it, though the new guy obviously wants to help. The next morning, Sam is awakened by the neighbor Renee trying to start her car. He interrupts her so he can fix her car and have a snippy conversation. While Sam is washing his hands, he suddenly hears a noise and finds Edward in his home tapping on the walls. He starts asking for Grace, mentioning the owls in the walls and finding a door before attacking Sam. The two then fight until the nurses come in and get Edward.
The security guard allows Sam to go talk with Blaine Shaw. After arriving at The Manor, he meets Blaine at the cafe, and the two talk about the contract to leave. After making Edward apologize, and talking more about the contract, and Sam’s loneliness, Sam doesn’t immediately sign it. He winds up going to the barbecue and starts to socialize a bit with the others. Judy starts choking, and that brings PTSD of Sam’s wife Lily having a stroke, causing him to leave.
Jack then goes to talk with Sam to console him. Sam then leaves Blaine a message that he won’t call the sheriff, and that he’s decided to stay at The Boroughs. Later on, an alarm sound wakes up Sam, who investigates. It turns out to be at Jack’s house. Jack doesn’t answer, so Sam breaks in to see what’s happening. Sam sees the creature consuming Jack. He accidentally catches its attention and fights it off.

So far, it’s an interesting start. The show kind of feels like a metaphor for nursing homes being a place to die (or have your time stolen), and the monster is the thing that takes it from you. Interesting concept.
