We begin episode 5 with Nile and Aggie still having their drink at her home. Aggie comments on his bruised knuckles, and Nile comes up with a lie, telling her he was jumped. After the two get along with one another, Nile heads upstairs to piss. Nina calls Nile, and Aggie tries to bring the phone up to him, catching him in her son Cooper’s room. After Nile consoles her and Aggie sleeps, he returns home, where he gets into an argument with Nina about Madison and their marriage.
The next morning, a protest against Jarvis Yards, led by Olivia Benitez, kicks off. Meanwhile, Nile drives to a junkyard to crush his car with Brian in the trunk.
After Aggie visits Shelley to apologize, she gets a call from Christopher Ingram, Madison’s brother, who tells her they need to talk about her book. Aggie meets with Christopher in the park, where he tells her about how his parents’ money is tied up in Jarvis Yards. Christopher’s father is one of the executors of the family trust and paid off half a loan on Jarvis Yards, in exchange for five ownership points. Chris tells her Maddy wasn’t suicidal before she died, and that she called him a month before the “suicide,” saying that whatever happens, she loved him. Chris then gives her a box with items from the penthouse that he didn’t want Nile to have.
That night, Aggie examines the contents of the box and finds part of a page ripped from Madison’s bird-watching book. She then puts the pieces together and realizes that the piece of the page was Maddy’s suicide note. Aggie tries to call Brian to tell him she has proof Nile killed Maddy. Little does she know that Nile has the phone and sees the text messages.
This episode was much better than the last one. The twists worked a little better than the last one, as it was a little more surprising to find out that Maddy’s parents likely knew more about Nile’s guilt than they let on. The first part of the episode felt like it kind of dragged on, not that it was inherently bad, but it just felt slower compared to the other episodes. It definitely picked up more and got better.
