Review: ‘Task’ Season 1, Episode 6 “Out Beyond Ideas of Wrongdoing and Rightdoing, There is a River”

Episode 6 opens where we left off in episode 5, with Tom having a standoff with Robbie. Jayson blows the Dark Hearts cover when he starts shooting. After a quick run and gun, Robbie winds up once again taking Tom and scolding him, asking him why he wouldn’t stay at the lake. Robbie tells Tom to hide while he runs off. Jayson winds up going after Robbie, while Perry fights Tom.

Some more action ensues involving Aleah, Lizzy, Anthony, and Kathleen fighting goons. It seems that in this episode, Tom and Robbie have developed a bit of respect for each other, especially since they share similarities with one another in terms of their backgrounds and some aspects of their lives. Perry and Jayson wind up going on the run, and the Task Force is disbanded as the case is being looked at by another division.

Tom visits Sam in a little housing room (at a repurposed juvenile detention facility), and ends up taking custody of him, bringing him home, where he introduces him to Emily and Sara. When Emily and Sara question Tom about it, he tells them that he is the missing kid they were looking for, and that because he and his wife were still registered as foster parents, he would take him in until someone else could care for him.

Later, Shelley stops by Robbie’s home and gives Maeve the money because Robbie, once again, does the old switcheroo with the money and drugs.

What was cool about this episode was that it had many elements of symbolism. Like the episode title, it feels like the events over the course of the episode created different paths that were paved for the characters, like finding a flowing river after being lost in the wild. Tom also seems to be taking care of Sam to make up for what he couldn’t do for Ethan. This episode, unlike the last one, began with rising action and then calmed down to a little resolution. This is almost like a form of symbolism; it indicates that things are beginning to die down and reach their end, not just chronologically episode-wise, but for the characters’ lives and the case.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
