To start, Tom Brandis is seen reflecting on the possibility of one of the members of Task being a rat. He then briefs everybody in the FBI about the suspect, Cliff. Cliff and Robbie are talking with each other when Robbie says his friend still drives the truck that could get them out of the city. Perry gets a text from a guy named Vincent, who tells him he is outside his house. Perry gets in his car for a conversation, where Vincent tells him that they also found out about Cliff, and they want Jayson out.
We see Emily talking to her friend again (in this episode, it’s a little clearer that she may actually be a therapist) about her relationship with Sara, Ethan, and how she feels about being adopted by Tom. We then get a flashback showing Robbie at the same little lake he was having fun at with Peaches and Cliff, and we finally get to see Billy in person. We are thrown back to the same place in the present, where Cliff and Robbie were hanging out with Sam. Robbie gets a text, and they head away.
Perry reluctantly confronts Jayson, with Jayson giving him the good news that they have word from the informant on Cliff and Robbie’s drug meetup. Robbie meets up with his trucker friend, and a man asks Sam how he got there when he sneaks away to let a fish into the stream nearby. Robbie proceeds to beat up the guy in front of Sam and other witnesses.
The possible broken trust in the FBI is shown when Tom questions Anthony, Lizz, and Aleah’s process, presumably to decipher who might be the rat. More questions ensue when Maeve questions Robbie on his plan to go to Canada and tells him that she and the kids aren’t going, and that she’s going to turn Sam in to the cops if he doesn’t. Perry is shown to be suspicious of Jayson’s girl, directly asking her if she may be an informant. Robbie is then shown bonding with his kid before he has to act, and the Task squad arrives at the meetup location, ready to go.
Cliff and Robbie pull up to the spot, and Cliff gets into a separate car as they talk about their quick plan. Tensions build up as the FBI tracks Cliff’s movements, and eventually swarms the car, which turns out to have an innocent couple in a similar-looking car. The Dark Heart truck rams into Cliff’s car as Robbie heads toward his location. Cliff is nearly squashed into a hamburger and veers off into the woods in the nick of time. Robbie quickly looks for Cliff, and the FBI plans its next moves.
Lizzy and Anthony are talking about the mission screw up at a bar together, and Lizzy brings up how Ray is a career criminal and likely played them, which could honestly be true. We see the relationship between Lizzy and Anthony bloom. Meanwhile, Emily and her co-worker return from a party, with Emily completely wasted. Tom catches them and kicks out the co-worker, when Emily tells him she heard the conversation he had the other night with Sarah.
The Dark Hearts gang only gets a brick of fentanyl from Cliff, and they have been severely beating him to gain info. Robbie is then shown to have the bag with the rest of the fentanyl. Tom and Perry flip through their files to try and figure out who could be the potential moles. Aleah calls and tells Tom they got a tip from a witness involved in the earlier beating of the man from Robbie. The image shows Sam alive and well, as well as a little of Robbie’s face. It is only a matter of time before they solve it now.
All in all, the episode started off a little slow, with a little more dialogue/development, but the pace did pick up as it went on, and it didn’t fully detract from continuing to see what the rest of the episode had to offer. It seems like the show is beginning to pick up the pace in terms of content, and while it isn’t a bad thing to have the backstory and learn, you obviously can’t have the show be all that, otherwise it would get a little boring.
