In Season 1, Episode 1 of the Disney Plus series Tales of the Empire, titled “The Path of Fear,” the narrative unfolds during the Battle of Dathomir. The Separatist droid army, under the command of General Grievous (Matthew Wood), leads the genocide against the Nightsisters after the treachery of Mother Talzin: attempting to assassinate Darth Tyrannus in an effort to foil the Sith Grand Plan for selfish reasons. During the battle, a group of Nightsisters, led by Morgan Elsbeth’s (Cathy Ang) mother, Selena (Diana Lee Inosanto), is ambushed by General Grievous. Selena duels Grievous in order to give her daughter and the Nightsisters under her protection the chance to escape. However, Grievous kills Selena in front of a grieving Morgan, who is later forced to run when she is overwhelmed by BX droid commandos. In the end, the Nightsister coven of Dathomir is wiped out, with Morgan as one of the only survivors.
Morgan’s life is saved by the Mountain Clan under the leadership of the Matron (Lydia Look), with the help of the latter’s daughter, Nali (Daisy Lightfoot). The Mountain Clan are female witches who practice some form of Light Magick that contrasts with the Dark Magick the Nightsisters practice. The destruction of her people angers Morgan, and she wants vengeance against the forces who destroyed her home. Morgan overhears Nali and her witch friends expressing fear that the Separatist army will turn their attention to destroying the Mountain Clan. Morgan exploits this fear to manipulate Nali and the other Mountain Clan witches into helping her break into a Nightsister weapon cache, but they are ambushed by Separatist forces who kill Nali and the witches accompanying them. Morgan’s life is saved when the Matron arrives and uses her Light Magick to destroy the droid forces with one single strong spell.
Nali’s death saddens the Matron, who lived to see her daughter die, and Morgan grieves the mistake she made leading to Nali’s death. The Matron is not angry but disappointed with the choice Morgan made to recklessly cause the death of four witches, including the Matron’s own daughter, just to satisfy her need for vengeance. Morgan chose her own path, a dark path, one many Sith took as they fell deeper into the depravity of the Dark Side: Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.
