Review: ‘Talamasca: The Secret Order’ Season 1, Episode 4 “Wet Work”

Previously on AMC’s series Talamasca: The Secret Order, Helen tells Guy about the 752 and how they must return it to the Talamasca. After learning Helen knows more than she lets on, Guy can’t trust her. He meets one of Keves’ coven sisters, Doris, who decides to protect Guy from the dangers he’s unaware of. Guy confronts Jasper (William Fichtner), only for them to team up to take down the secret order.

Jasper wakes Guy up for breakfast. He thinks Guy’s wanting to work with him is a ruse, but Guy assures him it isn’t —he wants to take down Talamasca.  Jasper takes him to the basement, where he shows him his new vampire, Checkers, from the previous episode. Before the vampire can attack Guy, Jasper snaps his fingers, and it listens. Jasper wants Guy to go to the Westcroft Hotel to find out where the 752 book is. He tells Guy that the only way he’ll be able to see his mother again is if they expose the Talamasca.

The detective working on Keves’  murder case goes to the park to look for any evidence. She finds the envelope that Soledad hid. There’s a flash drive inside. When she returns to the office, she and her partner review the database.

Guy goes to the hotel, and Checkers waits in the car with Jasper’s security in case anything happens. Guy uses his mind-reading to listen to everyone’s thoughts to get information. A man named  Raglan James finds him and knows that Guy is an agent for the Talamasca. Guy realizes that Raglan is also part of the order. The witch, Doris, finds him at the hotel and tries to get him to leave, but Guy doesn’t listen. She confronts him about Keves’ death. He tells her that he’s there to find information on Archie.

Guy and Raglan meet with a new client, with Guy posing as Raglan’s assistant. The client is the man Jasper warned Guy about, and whom he needs to get information from.  Raglan suggests that Guy can read minds, revealing his secret. The meeting turns violent when the vampire’s guard opens fire on Raglan. The vampire then grabs Guy’s face and makes him read his mind. Guy sees the vampire’s memory as a young boy, the only survivor of a violent massacre. While this is happening, Checkers has silently broken into the adjacent bedroom, killing a guard before he can reach the meeting.

After the massacre in the hotel suite, Raglan and Guy walk into the bloody bedroom. Guy grabs a gun from the floor and points it at Raglan, who opens a briefcase that has vials of ancient vampire blood inside.

Next, Jasper takes Guy to see the vampire the Talamasca’s been taking blood from, in Jasper’s words, “Bleeding him dry.” Jasper rips his head off his body, leaving him there so Talamasca can’t abuse him anymore. While in the car, Jasper tells him about a note that the driver got from Doris, warning Jasper that Guy was in danger at the hotel.

Overall, this was a chaotic episode. between Guy’s interaction with Raglan to Doris being put into the mix, a lot is going on. Will Benton’s acting as Checkers is incredible to watch, seeing him as a Revenant Vampire. Also, the different eye colors of the supernatural beings are intriguing. It will be shocking to see what the detectives find on the flash drive that Soledad hid. It’s hard to tell who Guy should trust —Doris or Jasper?

Rating: 9/10
