Review: ‘Supacell’ Season 1, Episode 6 “Supacell”

The season finale of Supacell starts with a bang as we pick up where we left off. Michael, Rod, Sabrina, and Tazer are standing together against the men in the hoods or, as they are called, hunters. The hunters go to attack, but Michael freezes time. Tazer goes to kill them while they are frozen, but Michael teleports him away, leaving Sabrina and Rod. Sabrina and Rod try to fight them, but a hunter throws a fireball at Rod, and he is badly burned. The hunters crowd Sabrina, who uses her powers to throw them back. One of the hunters goes to attack Sabrina as her powers stop working, but Michael freezes time once again and saves her.

We then cut to Sabrina and Michael in Sabrina’s apartment, standing over a badly injured Rod. Sabrina tells Michael they need a hospital, but as she says this, Rod’s burns begin to heal, much to the two’s relief. Michael retrieves Tazer from the location he teleported to, finding him asleep on a bench; he teleports back to the apartment and sees Sabrina and Rod sleeping. Michael puts down Tazer and falls asleep himself.

In the next scene, we see  the agents reviewing the footage from the hunters. The operation’s boss,  Ray,expresses confusion at how the four have found each other. We then see Dionne talking to Mr. Johnson. Dionne and Mr. Johnson listen to a phone call between himself and Jasmine. They talk about the location of Jasmine and the other people with powers. Mr. Johnson gives Dionne the address, but Dionne says it’s the Ashington estate and is about to be demolished. Mr. Johnson tells Dionne that he put a tracker in Jasmine’s backpack and tracked her to that location. The agency called him and warned him to leave as they were watching him.

We then cut to a worried Dionne calling Michael, who is still asleep along with others. She calls him repeatedly and even calls his mother to check on him. Not having any luck, she begins researching the Ashington Estate. We then return to Sabrina’s apartment, where Rod is talking to the hospital about Spud, whose condition has remained the same. Michael awakens to find his phone dead and Rod, Sabrina, and Tazer awake. Michael asks for a charger, but Tazer accosts him, and Sabrina pulls him back. Michael explains the hunter’s purpose.

Cut to Ray walking through the cells of the prison. He enters a room where a badly injured man is sitting. The man is Andre, and Jasmine, Mr. Johnson’s daughter, heals him. Ray then offers Andre a job as a hunter, enticing him with money and a better life for his son. Ray then tells Andre the reason he and the others have powers. Supacell is a mutation of Sickle cell. It’s very rare, and one of their parents must have the sickle cell trait.

In the next scene, Rod, Michael, Tazer, and Sabrina discuss what they must do. Tazer wants to kill them, but Michael refuses. Sabrina then asks Tazer about Craig, Kraze’s real name, to find her sister. Tazer then gets a phone call from Kraze, who asks Tazer to meet, and he threatens his grandmother. Sabrina and Tazer threaten each other, but Michael plays peacemaker. Sabrina walks away from Tazer in disgust; Michael asks for his number, and as Tazer leaves, he reveals to Sabrina Kraze’s location, A-town.

We return to Dionne taking pictures of the Ashington Estate when Braggs and his crew then harass her. All while this is happening, Michael calls her and hears what is happening. As Braggs  leaves for a phone call from Kraze, and Michael teleports to Dionne. She embraces him and tells him about the Ashington Estate. We then see Sabrina looking up A-town. She is convinced Tazer is lying, but Rod tells her that A-town is just a nickname for  the Ashington Estate.

We then return to Michael and Dionne. They both admit they were wrong in their recent arguments, but Dionne tells Michael that she wants to put the wedding on hold so he can figure out if he really wants and be a hero. Michael finally reveals to Dionne the truth about her death.

Dionne, much to Michael’s horror  accepts her fate. Michael assures Dionne that he will save her, and Dionne agrees. During this emotional moment, Rod and Sabrina pull up. Michael then informs Rod and Sabrina about the estate, and Dionne joins them. They find an underground entrance and drive through A-town. A-town is a drug den where drug addicts, dealers, and criminals gather.

Kraze finally arrives and is confronted by Sabrina, followed by Rod and Michael. Sabrina hits him and asks about Shar, Kraze goes to attack her but Sabrina throws him back with her powers. Then, Tazer appears in front of Kraze, ready to kill him, but Sabrina stops him as she still doesn’t know where her sister is. While this happens, a portal opens, and hunters attack; Michael is knocked unconscious. The hunters all join up, and Sabrina tells Kraze to join her, Tazer, and Rod. But in a shocking twist, Kraze is revealed to be the leader of the gang of hunters and has powers. Kraze can replicate the powers of other supers.

Kraze  attacks the group but they defend themselves. Kraze then tells Sabrina that the hunters took Shar as they thought she had powers. More fighting ensues, and during the fight, we learn that Andre is one of the hunters, albeit reluctantly. Sabrina is about to be attacked by a hunter, when she throws the hunter back,  accidentally killing her. Another hunter in agony uses her powers to suffocate Sabrina, but Andre, who is holding an unconscious Michael, tells her to stop. But Tazer, while invisible, slashes the hunter’s throat, saving Sabrina. Andre begs to leave, and another hunter agrees, as they cannot return empty-handed.

Kraze, however, is more worried about Tazer and calls him his real name, Tayo. The hunters gather an unconscious Sabrina and Rod as Tazer remains invisible. While Kraze taunts Tazer, the hunter opens a portal. Andre prepares to walk through, but Tazer attacks him. Tazer goes to kill Andre, but Michael freezes time and saves Andre. Michael begs Andre to join them. But Michael loses control of his powers, and time unfreezes. Kraze  attacks Tazer and almost killing him, but Andre throws Kraze across the lot. The five are finally allied together.

Sabrina crushes the final hunter under rubble as Kraze surrenders and reveals what happened to Tazer’s mom. He says he has no more power left, but he has a device that can open a portal to the agency so they can save the others and find Sabrina’s sister. However, this is a ruse. As Rod goes to check for the device, Kraze kills him and brutally murders the others. Michael, barely alive screams in agony; as he uses his powers to return to the moment before their deaths. Michael then stabs Kraze, seemingly killing him. Sabrina yells that she can’t find her sister now, but Kraze, still alive, lets out one last gunshot. Rod speeds Michael out of the way, but in a brutal twist, the bullet hits Dionne, and she dies in Michael’s arms as he screams in despair. He failed.

We then cut to Gabriel’s bar a few days later. The five are meeting along with Spud, who has woken up. Michael tells the rest of the group that he is going to the future to find who is behind this, and when he gets back, they will make them pay. Rod, Michael, Andre, Tazer, and Sabrina’s eyes glow as Michael teleports away.

We then see Kraze, still alive, being treated by Ray. However, in a shocking twist, Ray is revealed not to be the boss of the operation. The boss comes in, and revealed to beVictoria, the head of the sickle cell center caring for Michael’s mother is, is in charge. She berates Kraze for failing and has him killed. She then tells Ray they are now doing things her way. Cut to Black.

Overall, this was a good season finale. The cliffhanger may disappoint some, but it leaves people wanting more. Everything came together, and seeing the five finally together after all this time was an incredible moment: strong acting, strong writing, and strong storytelling. Supacell was a surprising success, and people should be excited for more. The performances were solid, especially Tosin Cole and Adelayo Adedayo, who play Michael and Dionne, respectively. Supacell accomplished its task of telling a new story and did a fantastic job of that.
