Previously on Prime Video’s Sterling Point, Ellis found a paper with information regarding his dad, Joe, with a request to gain guardianship of Ramona. Annie chooses to spend her birthday with Rory at a club. Ramona and Oona confess their feelings for each other and share a kiss.
The episode begins with Annie waking up the next morning in bed with Rory. She quietly freaks out, gets dressed, and leaves. Before she leaves the area, her dad, Steven, shows up with Ellis. She freaks out and has Ellis take her home.
At home, Annie tells Ramona she slept with Rory; Ellis knows about it, and now her father is in Sterling Point. After getting some rest, Annie goes back to Rory’s to have a family dinner with her dad and Connor. Annie and Connor are both mad at Steven for lying to them their whole lives about Sterling Point. Steven says that he didn’t want them to know their mom had an affair. He said Goldie began to change and wanted to live there on the island, but he didn’t. The conversation grows more intense when Annie brings up Joe, and Connor learns that Joe is Ellis’ father. Steven tells her that Annie cannot hang out with Ellis anymore because of who his father is.
A few days later, Annie, Oona, Ellis, Sully, and Ramona go to Maple’s talent show at camp. Maple informs them that she started her menstruation and is embarrassed when Oona celebrates it, and her sister makes her a crown. They all decide to stay back at camp for the night. That night, Maple confides in Annie that she feels her childhood is over, but Annie reassures her it’s not. She asks if life gets any easier, and Annie tells her bluntly, no. When Maple falls asleep, Annie leaves the room before getting emotional. Ellis follows to check on her, and she tells him that she feels as though she never truly experienced her childhood, which she blames her dad for.
Later, Steven shows up at the house looking for Annie. Instead, he sees Joe on the dock. Steven tells Joe that he was a “distraction” for Goldie to use when being away from New York. Joe tells him that he knows Goldie didn’t love Steven anymore and that she wasn’t sure if she ever did. Steven lunges at him, but Joe is quick to defend himself and throws a punch before walking away.
The next morning, Ellis’ mother, Kate, confronts Joe about the tape. She asks if he was in love with Goldie, and he avoids answering. Kate asks about Ramona being his daughter, and he tells her the truth without saying a word. Meanwhile, Annie finds Ramona sitting alone by the water. Ramona gifts her a flower crown and tells her, “I feel like now that I know you, I miss her more.”
Back at the house, Denise, Connor, and Steven are waiting in the living room. Steven tells Annie it’s time for them to go as Denise tells Ramona that Joe is her father. Ramona figures out that Annie and Ellis already knew when Ellis tells her about the guardianship. Ramona upsettingly runs out of the house, and Oona runs after her, only to find she’s already taken the boat and driven away.
Two themes that go together in this episode are growing up and grieving your childhood. This episode talks a lot about becoming an adult and missing out on things as a kid. We see this in Maple, Annie, and Ramona. Maple is having a hard time accepting that she’s growing up; meanwhile, Annie and Ramona are both vocal about missing out on being normal kids and having a childhood, nonetheless, having one together as sisters.
Overall, this was a great episode. This episode showed a lot of vulnerability and realistic emotions about life. It was filled with heartbreak, despair, and longing. Mabel Strachan did an incredible job as Maple in this episode, showing a side of her that we haven’t seen yet. We learn she’s just a young girl who’s starting a new chapter in her life and is unsure about what’s to come next. Hopefully more of that will show throughout the rest of this season.
