Review: ‘Sterling Point’ Season 1, Episode 1 “But I Just Took an Ambien”

Prime has premiered a new series, Sterling Point, which focuses on a teenage girl named Annie and her twin brother Connor, who discover that they’ve inherited a remote island in Canada from their grandfather. As Annie begins to find out more about her family, secrets and drama begin to unravel. The series stars actors such as Ella Rubin, Keen Ruffalo, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Jay Duplass, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie.

The episode begins with Annie looking to see if she’s been accepted to her dream college. Connor and their father, Steven, watch as she looks at her laptop. She cries upon finding out she was denied.

Annie hangs out at home with her boyfriend, Oliver. She tells him that now that she’s not going to be in the program for the summer, she can come to Thailand with him, but it’s obvious he doesn’t want her to. Connor tells them he got a phone call from a lawyer that their estranged grandfather died. Later, we see Steven and his kids meeting with the lawyer to go over the will. Connor and Annie learn about the ownership of the property in Canada.

After Steven puts the files in the safe, Annie sneaks into the office and finds mail from their grandfather, Gordon, that Steven kept from them. Annie reads them; some are birthday cards, and some are letters. She learns that Gordon wants Annie to find their mother. Connor agrees to cover for his sister before she travels to Canada. After the flight, she meets her seaplane pilot, Ellis, who takes her to Sterling Point.

Annie learns that Ellis knew her grandfather. Before leaving, he tells her that Gordon owned the entire island, which is now hers and Connor’s. She enters the lake house and looks around, finding pictures of her mom. As she walks around outside, she finds a woman who grabs her husband, Joe, who helps her find someone with a boat to take her to the mainland. She meets a girl named Oona, who decides to drive her to the mainland. At the grocery store, Annie meets Oona’s friend, Sully, who joins them for the rest of the day.

Meanwhile, after Joe learns that Annie is renting Gordon’s house, he calls Gordon’s lawyer. We learn that he is connected to Goldie, Annie and Connor’s mother. He puts two and two together, figuring out that Annie is her daughter.

While she’s hanging out with Oona, Annie sees Ellis. The two of them talk about the island, and Annie learns that Sterling Point could be worth millions of dollars. Later, everyone attends a party, and she runs into an old childhood friend, Rory. The two of them catch up, but she leaves out Gordon. Rory reminds her that their moms were close friends, so he takes her down to see his mom, Denise. Denise tells her about her mom wanting to file for divorce from her father. Before Annie can react, the group goes home, and Ellis drops her off back at the lake house.

As she enters the house, she finds someone inside. The girl is startled and asks Annie, “What are you doing in my grandfather’s cottage?”

Overall, this was a great first episode to introduce Annie and the secrets that lie ahead. With already so much being uncovered in this first episode, it will be interesting to see what’s to come this season, especially now knowing that there’s a possibility Annie has an estranged sister. Ella Rubin did a great job this episode as Annie, as we’re introduced to her as the main character wanting to uncover all the secrets. What will happen in the second episode?
