Review: ‘Squid Game’ Season 2, Episode 7 “Friend or Foe”

Previously on the Netflix series Squid Game, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae), In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), and Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) formed a team from the X side to stick together and make sure no one dies. Tension runs high as the voting results come in, coming to a tie and forcing another vote in the next episode. Because of the tension, Thanos (Choi Seung-Hyun) and Lee Myung-gi (Yim Siwan) fight in the restroom, causing players to fight against each other, all while everyone else is sitting in their beds or talking among their groups.

The episode begins with Thanos and Lee Myung-gi still in the bathroom. Lee stabs Thanos with the fork again as everyone’s still fighting. Players start to kill each other as things get more heated. Because of the fight, at least four players were killed, meaning more money has now been added to the prize fund.

The other players who weren’t in the restroom, like Jung-bae and Gi-hun, are confused as they watch more cash enter the big money bin on the ceiling. Everyone watches as the other players come back from being in the bathroom, all bloodied and shaken. They try to put the other players against each other as they walk out, saying that they want to start a fight to lose voters for O and X.

One of the crew members catches Captain messing with the drone as they’re on the boat, while everyone else is asleep. Before he can ask Captain about it, Captain stabs him and pushes him into the ocean. Woo-Seok finds him and asks him about the noise, as it’s raining hard. Captain lies, telling him he heard something as well, but doesn’t know what it was.

Back on the island, the players begin to count how many they have on each side. Over the PA system, the players get told they have thirty minutes until it’s time for the lights to go off and into their beds. After that’s played, in the PA system where the guards, security, and snipers are, the system tells them to be ready for a “special game” momentarily, so that only means something bad is going to happen.

As the X’s are circled together, In-ho says they should attack first, and ambush them when they don’t notice. Gi-hun doesn’t agree with the plan. Gi-hun brings up the security and the Front Man. He tells them if they want to get out of there, they need to go through them first.

Jun-Hee warns Myung-gi to hide when the lights go out and to not get involved if something happens. Everyone goes to bed and the lights turn off. The O side gets ready for battle, walking over to the X side, while most of them hide underneath their beds.

As the fight is going on, Gi-hun’s plan works, being able to grab some weapons from the guards and kill them. They shoot the cameras and the guards call for backup. Gi-hun and Jung-bae ask l who all want to join in the fight. Several players want to participate. They grab their guns and Hyun-Ju teaches them all how to use their weapons. They make the surviving guard take them where the head office is upstairs.

They have a shoot-off with the guards among the stairwell. While everyone’s shooting, In-ho isn’t shooting at all, but no one can tell. Gi-hun and Jung-bae check the doors for the passageway to the control room. Gi-hun uses the guards’ mask and the door opens. The two of them walk inside.

Meanwhile, everyone checks their ammo as most are either out or only have a couple of bullets left. They contact Jung-bae with the walkie-talkie and they also are running low on ammo. In-ho decided to take two of the players to assist Gi-Hun and Jung-bae

Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul) has been tasked to collect leftover ammo from dead guards in the living quarters. Shaking nervously, he arrives safely but fear paralyzes him from returning back with the magazines.

Meanwhile, Gi-hun gets shot in the arm before In-ho and the two players meet them. Gi-hun gives him his extra case of ammo, encouraging him to take it since Dae-ho is on his way. With no sign of Dae-ho, Hyun-Ju goes back to find him.

As Hyun-Ju arrives in the living quarters, she finds Dae-ho back in their beds. He apologizes to her. She finds the magazines in a bag, but before she can leave, the guards come in, telling them all to lie face down. She loads up her gun, but before she has to chance to prepare herself, Geum-Ja (Kang Ae-Sim) tells her not to do it.

Back in the corridor, In-ho shoots the two players before they can kill the guards. He puts the walkie-talkie next to one of the dying players, to make Gi-Hun believe he’s dead. He then speaks into the walkie-talkie to the guards, stating, “Let’s wrap this up.”

The players at the hideout have no choice but to surrender since they’ve run out of ammo. Jung-bae and Gi-hun surrender as well, dropping their weapons and putting their hands up. The Front Man  comes up to them and asks, “Player 456, did you have fun playing the hero?” He points a gun at Gi-hun’s head. He then shoots Jung-bae as a consequence of what Gi-hun has done. Before he can do anything, he gets held to the ground, screaming and crying.

Overall, this season has been very entertaining. It was cool to see Gi-hun and Jun-ho working together to form a plan. It was intriguing seeing In-ho as the secret player, while in reality, he’s the Front Man. Now that Season 3 has just been announced to premiere in June 2025, what will happen to Gi-hun and all of the other players? Will In-ho show his face? Will Jun-ho and the crew be able to make it to the island?
