Review: ‘Rooster Season 1, Episode 2, “Trousers”

Greg enters Katie’s home and he tries to lighten the mood! Katie is on the couch with her hair unbrushed and in a robe. She refuses to wear actual shoes to the police station, so she slips on slippers and she and Greg get to the police station.

Archie is sitting across from them with the police officer from the previous episode taking notes. Katie admits that she started the fire with the burning of War & Peace, but she didn’t mean for all of Archie’s house to go down. Greg isn’t really helping as his comedic timing is off. It’s not so far off for the officer as he laughs so hard he knocks over a cup of coffee on Archie! He ruined his trousers! The fire that Katie started obviously burned down all of Archie’s belongings, so this is his last pair. Greg and the officer leave to go get paper towels for Archie, leaving him and Katie alone. They get to talking. Archie really does love Katie, and he lets her know that Sunny may not even keep the baby. Katie reveals that Greg doesn’t know about the pregnancy. Greg and the officer walk in as Katie punches Archie in the face. Greg grabs her and they run out.

Greg basically begs Walter not to fire  Katie. Walter tells him that she has to send a big email and apologize to the faculty. In his office, Walter goes onto his computer and it turns out Katie already resigned. Greg is crushed, but he knows he has to talk to her. Dylan walks in and there is some obvious tension between her and Greg. Walter immediately picks up on it and he offers to help Greg if he spills his guts. Greg feels like he doesn’t have a choice.

Greg and Katie take a walk. He does everything he can to try and convince her to stay. She likes being a professor, and shouldn’t let this setback determine her future. She says that she’s always wanted to steal the rooster from the top of a well-known building. It’s a trend. A professor has the opportunity to hide it and if one of their students finds it, they get the day off of class.

They stop in front of a town gift shop that sells Christmas items all year round. Greg is distracted  by hot chocolate with candy canes, angering Katie. She calls Greg out for running and hiding after he and her mother split. When she sees Greg’s face, she immediately regrets what she said and agrees that she’ll think about staying.

Archie enters his classroom and lets his students know that he will be on the BBC because his mate asked him to. It’s an amazing opportunity that could  potentially advance his career. He needs to do something about those trousers and the black eye he got from Katie. Later, Sunny is covering up Archie’s black eye with makeup, and lets him know that she’s keeping the baby. Archie doesn’t even live with her, he’s staying at a hotel. They obviously need to work some things out before they talk about their future.

After a candy cane hot chocolate run, Greg meets up with Walter. Walter brings up the job offer, but gives him an ultimatum: He must take the job in order for Katie to keep hers. Greg obviously takes it, and he’s not happy, but he is at least relieved knowing that Katie will be okay.

Greg grabs breakfast at a local restaurant. Dylan shows up furious because she found out that Greg told Walter about their “date.” She asks Greg to make it up to her and buy her breakfast. While they eat, she tells him a story. When she was applying for schools, she was scared to leave her home state. Her father surprised her with a trip to Brown, a very prestigious school that she got into. When she toured it, she knew she had to go there. At the end of the day, she encourages him to be there for Katie, to be a good dad. After hearing this message, Greg steals the rooster.

Greg returns with the rooster, but  Katie ends up feeling worse because she views it as her dad doing the one thing she never did. Greg puts his foot down and lets Katie know that she is better than this. He wants to give her the opportunity to bounce back that he never had. She takes his word for it, and agrees to write the apology letter. While they write, Katie slips out that Archie is expecting a baby. Greg runs to the hotel and grabs the master key. Greg storms right into Archie’s room and starts beating him up. All of this is being broadcast in the middle of Archie’s  BBC interview Archie also isn’t wearing any pants.

The episode ends with Katie loading Greg’s belongings into a car. She’s sad to see him go, but she’s honestly a bit relieved as she has so much going on in her life and doesn’t need her dad watching her every move. Greg gets into the car and yells “See you Monday!” A big “What?” from Katie comes out before we cut to black.

This episode was very well done. It was nicely paced and all of the storylines flowed together very well. They bounced off of one another, and nothing got lost in the mix. The ending was hysterical due to the fact Greg beat up Archie on live television. That is definitely going to come back in future episodes. Greg unquestionably has so much love for Katie and it will be exciting to see the two of them working together at the University. Archie becoming a father is  an interesting storyline because if he really means what he says, he is still deeply in love with Katie. We don’t know enough about their past yet or the two of them as true characters, which makes future episodes something to look forward to.
