Review: ‘Pulse’ Season 1, Episode 3 “Power”

Previously, the power went out on the Netflix series Pulse, and the generators at Maguire Hospital completely shut off. Dr. Natalie Cruz (Justina Machado) is concerned about her daughter, who is still in a coma. Without power, there’s no way to tell if she’ll be okay. Dr. Danielle Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) begins to get a handle on things, making orders and working with Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell). Dr. Tom Cole (Jack Bannon) does surgery for the first time, doing the procedure on the new paramedic Nia Washington (Ash Santos). The episode ends with Danielle standing outside after losing all power in the hospital.

The next episode begins with Danielle still standing outside. She notices a car entering a parking lot, and as it’s still storming outside, the car crashes, and the passengers start screaming. Danielle immediately runs toward the vehicle. A pole crashed down on the car. There’s a man and a woman. The woman is okay, but the man’s leg is stuck because of the pole. Danielle runs back inside to get some help.

Xander and Luis Dominguez (Arturo Del Puerto) try lifting the pole, but it’s too heavy. Danielle stabs holes in the tires to make the car come down from the pole, and it works, immediately setting the man free from the vehicle. They get him on a stretcher and rush him into the hospital.

Next, we see Xander in the bathroom, changing into dry clothes. Danielle comes inside and begins to do the same thing. He asks her if she wants him to leave, and she tells him it’s okay. He compliments her on what she did with the car, and she tells him he doesn’t have to be nice to her. He rebuttals, saying that he’s just being himself. He gives her his Chief Resident badge since she has the title now. They both agree on keeping their personal matters away from working together.

Intern Camila Perez (Daniela Nieves) checks on her patient. The girl thinks she should leave the hospital to go back to a party, but Camila tells her to stay because she’s having severe stomach pains.

Camila finds Dr. Sophie Chan (Chelsea Muirhead) and tells her about her patient. Sophie looks at the paperwork and follows Camila to the patient’s bed. Camila opens the curtain, only for the girl to not be there anymore.

Camila goes to Luis and asks if he’s seen her. He tells her that she left, figuring that she was discharged. He says she looked fine, and Sophie chimes in, telling him that her appendix has burst. They go to Tom, and he’s now frustrated because he’s supposed to be leading the surgery for the patient, but she’s not there.

Later, Sophie heads outside to look for the girl. Camila begs her not to, because of the storm. Sophie storms out, and Camila follows behind, not letting her go alone.

Xander goes to one of his patients, who has a dislocated hip. He calls for Dr. Sam Elijah’s (Jessie T. Usher) help. After they fix the hip, Xander asks him if Danielle has ever said anything to him about the two of them. Sam says she hasn’t, and then Xander asks if he trusts her. Xander tells him that Danielle wrote her essay for the Resident Chief months ago. Xander says this to try to hurt Sam’s relationship with Danielle.

The patient who got his leg stuck is beginning to lose blood flow in his leg, so they take him in for surgery. Danielle gets Tom and tells him that she wants to learn from him. He tells her each step as they decrease the swelling in the man’s leg.

Next, we see Cruz with her comatose daughter. Her daughter wakes up, but the sedation vent is decreasing every second. She orders the nurse to stop the machine, wanting her to breathe on her own before the vent dies off. The nurse disagrees, and Cruz tells her to leave the room, making her do it herself.

Camila and Sophie are still looking for their patient. They’re on the road, yelling her name. Sophie tells Camila that she makes her look bad because she’s always positive and has a smile on her face. Camila looks at her in disbelief, saying that she admires her. After having a deep conversation, they thankfully find the patient. Sophie stands up, hears an ambulance truck, and stands in front of it so they can get back to the hospital safely. Camila yells, and the truck speeds, immediately stopping when the driver sees Sophie. They find their patient and quickly bring her in on a stretcher.

The fuel trucks finally make it to the hospital, with the help of Xander and his father, whom he called to get the trucks from.

Xander and Danielle’s female patient goes into surgery, as she gets a code blue. The two of them start to argue as she brings up his calling his dad. He yells at her, letting everyone in the surgery room know they’re living together. He says she pushed him away and went to HR because he told her he loved her. Harper and Sam both witness the conversation. Xander storms out of the room, leaving Danielle shocked and hurt.

The nurse lets Cruz know about the fuel trucks. Cruz’s daughter begins to struggle with her breathing, her stats dropping quickly. Cruz tries to talk her through it. She codes blue.

Overall, this was a pretty good episode. We get to learn more about different characters like Sophia and Camila. We also learn more about Danielle and Xander’s dynamic from the beginning and what it is now in the present. It seems like the tension between the two of them won’t end anytime soon. What will happen to Dr. Cruz’s daughter?

Rating: 9.5/10
