Review: ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 1, Episode 6, “The Elements”

Previously on Apple TV’s original series, Presumed Innocent, Rusty Sabich’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) trial of murdering Carolyn Pholemus (Renate Reinsive) has begun. We learned that Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp) believes Rusty isn’t innocent of the murder.

The episode starts with the trial. The jury is looking at the images of Carolyn’s wounds. The doctor who examined her body is on the stand as a witness, stating that Rusty came in to look at her body and that his mood seemed “off.” When Raymond questions the doctor’s beliefs, the doctor raises his voice, causing chaos in the courtroom.

It then goes to the next day of the trial. We see Barbara and Rusty going inside the courtroom. They’re still going over the images of Carolyn’s murder. There’s none of Rusty’s DNA on her body except for his skin on her fingernails.

After the trial, Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick), Jaden (Chase Infiniti), and Barbara are home. Barbara cleans out her shed where her artwork is stored.

Returning to the trial, Mya (Gabby Beans) questions Eugenia (Virginia Kull). Mya asks her if Carolyn ever made an HR report on Rusty, which she says no to, but she does mention that Carolyn did report Tommy, which shocks everyone in the room. After that answer, Mya is done. Tommy stands up and asks Eugenia if she’s ever witnessed him acting unprofessional. As she tells him no, she mentions that Carolyn never felt comfortable working on cases with him because he gave her the “ick.” Eugenia’s testimony as a witness is that Rusty began to become unprofessional and obsessed with Carolyn.

Everyone goes home for the day and Jaden talks with her dad. She tells him that she learned in her psychology class, that “people can disassociate from their memories.” He tells her his memory is good but it doesn’t sound convincing.

Barbara tells Rusty about the bartender she met. She admits that she kissed him. Rusty is quiet. In this moment he’s being a hypocrite. They get into an argument and Rusty grabs Barbara’s sweater roughly. She tugs it off and walks away.

It’s the next morning and when Rusty is in the kitchen, Jaden comes and hugs him, apologizing to him for last night. While they’re home, Barbara is at Raymond and Lorraine’s (Elizabeth Marvel) house. Barbara tells her that the night Carolyn died, Rusty texted her thirty times.

Meanwhile, Rusty, Raymond, Tommy, and Nico meet with Judge Lyttle (Noma Dumezweni) to discuss the trial. She tells them that Rusty’s best result is getting eight years in prison because the murder was most likely unintentional.

Rusty comes back home and as he settles in, Jaden is asleep on the couch. He tries to wake her up, but then puts a blanket on her so that she can sleep. As he watches her sleeping, Barbara comes into the living room and watches. He asks her why she’s staying in the marriage. She tells him that it’s the same reason he does, the answer being the kids.

On the next day of the trial, Carolyn’s son Michael (Tate Birchmore) is on the stand as a witness. On the night Carolyn was murdered, Michael went to her home to watch her, which was mentioned in a previous episode. Michael tells the jury that he believes Rusty was the one who murdered his mother. When it’s Raymond’s turn to question him, before he can get a word out, he starts to have a heart attack.

Overall, this was a very good episode. There’s still no true evidence to show that Rusty murdered Carolyn. Barbara telling Rusty about the bartender was good because it showed she’s able to be honest with him about her wrongs. Ending this episode with a major plot twist just makes things more intriguing for the viewers. What will happen to Raymond? Will he survive?
