Review: ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 1, Episode 5 “Pregame”

Previously on Apple TV’s Presumed Innocent, Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets placed in a tougher position as his DNA comes back underneath Carolyn Pohlemus’ fingernails (Renate Reinsive). Brian Ratzer (Marco Rodriguez) stormed over to Rusty’s home, upset with him. Rusty’s kids, Jaden (Chase Infiniti) and Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick), began supporting him and their mom, Barbara (Ruth Negga), through this process, sticking together as a family.

The episode starts back from where it left off. Rusty yells at Brian to leave and he goes back inside, shutting the door. Raymond is yelling for Rusty over the phone, while Barbara is trying to console Jaden. Later on, Rusty explains who the man was and why he came over. Barbara is worried that Brian will go to the police.

In the morning, Raymond wakes up from another weird dream. At breakfast, he and his wife Lorraine (Elizabeth Marvel) talk about the case. Raymond still believes Rusty isn’t guilty. Lorraine urges him to find more evidence and to talk to Rusty more about everything that happened. Lorraine believes that Rusty is guilty of the murder.

We then see Rusty go to Brian’s house. He goes to the office afterward and tells Raymond and Mya about it. Rusty tells them that he has an idea that Brian and Liam Reynolds (Mark Harelik) could be tied to each other. Before leaving the office, Rusty tells Mya and Raymond that Brian will be meeting them at the office the next day.

Later on that day, while Rusty is on the treadmill in the garage, Jaden asks her mom if he did it. She tells her no, which Jaden believes. In her bedroom, Jaden and Rusty talk about the case and he tells her he thinks Brian killed Carolyn. She tells him that she’s scared of what will happen to him.

The next evening, Barbara meets a bartender, Clifton (Sarunas J. Jackson), at his place. He shows her some of his art. She’s met him a few times at his bar and it’s clear that there’s chemistry. She tells Clifton that she wants to be loyal, but she’s willing to take risks with him. Sometime after, Barbara goes to her therapy appointment with Dr. Liz Rush (Lily Rabe). She tells her that she kissed Clifton. In that moment with him, she felt wanted, desired, and relieved, which she hadn’t felt in a while. She tells Liz that she feels like Jaden judges her for staying with Rusty.

It’s now time for the meeting with Brian, Rusty, Mya, and Raymond. Mya shows Brian pictures of Bunny Davis the day she was murdered. Liam Reynolds was the one who murdered her. When Mya asks Brian if he knows her, he doesn’t deny it. He tells them that he did spend some time with her, just not the night she died. She then shows him a picture of Liam. He says he doesn’t know him.

Next, we see Rusty with Raymond. It’s the night before the trial begins. Raymond asks if Barbara thinks he’s guilty and he says no. He then tells him that Lorraine believes he’s guilty. Raymond wants to put Barbara on the stand as a witness because she believes Rusty is innocent.

They make it to the courthouse and are surrounded by many more reporters. Everyone takes their seats in the room and the trial begins. Tommy gives the jury his opening statement, having a very compelling and strong structure.

What will happen? How will Raymond and Mya start this trial? What will their opening statements be? It’s intriguing to see if anything new comes up during the trial regarding the case. Will there be any new evidence?
