Review: ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 1, Episode 2, “People Vs. Rozat Sabich”

Previously on Apple TV’s original series Presumed Innocent, Prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets the news that his colleague and mistress, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), was murdered. As he begins working on the case, another colleague of his, Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), takes his place as chief deputy prosecutor, along with Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp) stepping down and Nico Della Guardia (O-T Fagbenle) taking the lead on the case as head chief. The four of them have a conversation and Tommy tells them that not only were Rusty’s fingerprints found in Carolyn’s home, but she died pregnant.

The series’ second episode starts back with the four men in their meeting. Tommy asks Rusty if he has any idea who might’ve been the father of Carolyn’s fetus. Rusty doesn’t respond easily, brushing the question off before leaving the room and Raymond following behind, upset that Rusty didn’t mention anything about his personal life with Carolyn. Rusty tells him that he wanted to keep it a secret from everyone and didn’t think it would have been important.

Then, we see Rusty having a sit-down conversation with his wife, Barbara (Ruth Negga). He tells her that Carolyn was pregnant. He also tells her that he’s now a suspect in the murder. She’s upset to find out that Rusty and Carolyn had spent time together recently because the affair ended a while ago.

After the conversation with her husband, Barbara goes through some of Rusty’s files on the case. She looks over the pictures of the crime scene. It’s noticeable that they’ve affected her because while they’re having dinner, she’s silent until she tells the kids to put their phones down. Barbara makes Rusty tell them about the affair. As he apologizes to them, their daughter, Jaden (Chase Infiniti), leaves the room, with her brother Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick) following behind. Barbara tells Rusty that she’s not going to be alone this time, meaning he’s not going to shut her out.

Barbara goes upstairs and talks to the kids. Afterward, Rusty makes him a cot on the pullout couch and sits down watching TV. Jaden comes in and asks if he loves her mom. He nods telling her he does. She asks him why he had an affair and he breaks down crying.

Rusty wakes up early in the morning to noise coming from the backyard. He walks out there and Kyle is throwing a ball. Then they hear a police car pull into their driveway. Rusty goes to check it out and there are multiple vehicles pulled up. They have a search warrant. The family sits in the living room as police break down their things, making a mess of everything. Rusty gets pulled aside to do a cotton swab test for DNA.

On the same day, Rusty and Barbara meet with Dr. Liz Rush (Lily Rabe). He gets frustrated with Liz when she tells him that he’s a liar. He lied to her about the affair still going on. He says he only lied about the affair and that’s it. Liz asks Barbara about how she feels and she says that she feels trapped. Barbara only wants to stay in their marriage because of the kids and because she does love him.

Next, we see Raymond and his wife Lorraine (Elizabeth Marvel) watching the news. As soon as Lorraine turns the TV off, the doorbell rings and it’s Rusty. Rusty tells Raymond about the search and Raymond tells him that he shouldn’t have been surprised. Rusty believes that once they find evidence of his communication with Carolyn on his phone and laptop, they’ll think he’d been stalking her.

Rusty wants Raymond to be his attorney, but Raymond turns him down. Frustrated, Rusty visits the prison to speak with Liam Reynolds (Mark Harelik). In the previous episode, viewers found out that Liam was someone that Carolyn put in prison for murder. The visitation doesn’t help him whatsoever, leaving him even more stressed than he was before.

It’s now nighttime and police return to their house, but it’s more serious this time. Rusty answers the door as Jaden gets Barbara. Rusty is arrested as Kyle watches from the staircase.

The next day, it’s time for court. Raymond is Rusty’s defense attorney. Rusty is able to return home as they figure out a date for their trial. At the end of the day, Rusty and his family are eating dinner on the couch. Rusty gets a random text saying that they saw him there when Carolyn was killed. Is that true?

Overall, this was a good episode. It dived deep into Rusty’s emotions regarding the case. It also showed Jaden and Kyle struggling with what’s going on around them. It will be interesting to see how the trial will go and what will happen to Rusty and his relationship with his family.
