Billy Pace was viewed as very dangerous in the eyes of President Bradford, and in episode 4, Billy is shown to earn his reputation based on his upbringing. The episode begins by exploring the life and mindset that was instilled into Billy as a teenager by his abusive uncle. Billy was taught never to hesitate and that it “has to go” when something is no good. Billy showcases this by killing his abusive uncle and being sent to juvenile detention where his violent nature only grows from there and into adulthood. Once he is freed from jail as an adult, a second chance at life is given to him. He attends a mercenary camp where his skills as a violent killer are used for “good” and his new lease on life sets him onto the path of being a useful weapon in the underground city known as “Paradise”.
Xavier’s investigation continues and now has Billy on his radar after receiving the message from the president about him being dangerous. However, it is complicated as flashbacks show the development of their friendship and how they navigated life in “Paradise” together. Flashbacks show how Billy was right there for Xavier and showed his worth in every situation to the point where Xavier brings Billy into his home to meet his kids and officially welcome him as family. The situation only gets all the more complex the deeper Xavier looks into Billy. Sinatra puts Xavier at the top of her radar due to all that Billy has done in his past and the potential part he inadvertently played in the situation involving the president.
Billy shows his genuine true love for Xavier and his family through the guidance he provides Xavier’s daughter on opening up to President Bradford’s son about her true feelings for him. Through this advice, we learn more about his true feelings for Agent Jane and that he genuinely likes her. Billy’s love for Xavier’s family is highlighted again through flashbacks explaining to the president the struggles people face surrounding questions about the world outside the city. Pondering whether anyone survived the tragedy on Earth, the president sends a team of scientists outside the underground city to explore possible signs of life. The information gathered by the scientists proves the environment is hospitable for life as the air is breathable. But this information never makes it to the city below as Billy is ordered by Sinatra to kill the scientists and any hope of finding survivors.
Billy has been holding this information within and thinks it may have possibly had something to do with President Bradford being taken out. This leads to Billy confronting Sinatra about all that he has done for her and threatens her to leave Xavier and his family alone. Sinatra shows her power by not backing down and letting Billy know he was brought to “Paradise” to be used as a weapon and that he isn’t the only one. She warns Billy that she can take everything from him in his life in an instant, but Billy does not back down. Billy, knowing his time is limited, wants to immediately tell Xavier all that he knew and had done for Sinatra, but he wants to be an uncle to the kids for one more night. This shows the true love and care he has for Xavier and his family. The episode ends with Billy settling in at his home with his girlfriend, Agent Jane, who unveils her true nature. She spikes Billy’s drink, killing him, and unveils herself as Sinatra’s other weapon. Billy Pace lies dead, taking all information on Sinatra with him.
This episode was another excellent entry engaging us with the characters, environment, and the emotionally moving exploration into Billy Pace and his tragic upbringing. Jon Beavers’ amazing performance as Billy Pace kept us emotionally attached to his character. We became endeared to him as he was making the best out of his second chance at life in the underground city. The twist at the end with Billy’s death orchestrated by Sinatra does a great job illustrating the true power she has over the entire city and the secrets she is hiding through her schemes and power moves. Each episode continues to elevate this series, pushing the mystery forward with new clues and answers being unveiled to slowly reveal the truth behind the whole matter. Through the powerful performances and the emotional human moments between the characters, this political murder mystery continues to shine on all cylinders.
