Season 1, Episode 7 directed by Yoon Sunghyun, and written by Han Jinwon and Jee Hojin, follows the desperate escape attempt of the 1st Platoon and Kang Young-joo as they fight to reach the safety of Suseo Station. While Young-joo is already far ahead on her journey, the 1st Platoon struggles to break free from the 77A Building. Given the direction of the story, it seems likely that the show will continue into a second season—if renewed.
This episode centers on the theme of courage. Both Young-joo and the 1st Platoon display remarkable bravery, wit, and determination in their fight for survival—not just for themselves, but for their loved ones. However, the episode also makes it clear that cowardice and selfishness can be fatal. Chef Paulo’s (Justin Harvey) demise exemplifies this, and Private Hwang Kyung-sik (Kim Jung-jin) may soon meet a similar fate after abandoning the group over a moral conflict, only to stumble into a horde of zombies.
Even singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin (played by himself) demonstrates courage in his own way. Rather than escaping, he chooses to stay behind in a subway station, comforting survivors with his music as they await an uncertain fate. The lingering hope is that the Korean military will arrive in time to cleanse Seoul of the zombie hordes and rescue those still holding on.
The 1st Platoon’s Escape
At the 77A Building, the remaining members of the 1st Platoon and three civilians are ambushed by zombies in the vents but manage to escape—except for Chef Paulo, who is infected and killed. Aaron Park (Kim Junhan) cleverly lures zombies to their deaths, easing the group’s escape. They reach a construction floor where they attempt to descend using a gondola lift.
However, their plan is disrupted when zombies leap onto the lift, breaking it and forcing them to evacuate onto another floor. Private Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min) is unable to escape in time and falls as the lift plummets to the ground. Miraculously, the lift remains tethered to the rooftop just long enough to swing him into a second-floor store, where he lands in a pile of plush toys. Believing him dead, the rest of the group moves on.
Now stranded, Lee Jae-yoon faces a new challenge: escaping the store while hordes of zombies wait outside. His only option? Donning a giant plush bear mascot suit and jumping out of the window, hoping the suit’s padding will cushion his fall.
The remaining survivors—Private Ra In-ho (Im Sung-jae), Corporal Kwak Gye-young (Bong Chan-wook), Sergeant Kim Young-man (Kim Sang-hyeol), Private Hwang Kyung-sik, Oh Soo-jeong (Hong Seo-hee), and Aaron Park—have made it farther than most.
Singing in the Dark
Meanwhile, Kang Young-joo (Jisoo) fights her way through the subway, navigating relentless zombie attacks as she pushes toward Suseo Station. Her combat style is reminiscent of a Resident Evil 2 protagonist, battling through tunnels to achieve her objective.
Despite the danger, she finds solace in an underground survivor group led by none other than Yoon Jong-shin. The singer-songwriter provides comfort through soft, heartwarming songs, prompting the survivors to reflect on their journey, losses, and loved ones. A video of Young-joo’s past camping trip with her boyfriend strengthens her resolve to keep moving forward, determined to reunite with Jae-yoon.
Unfortunately, her path grows even more treacherous. As she navigates the subway tunnels, a gang of ruthless criminals begins to hunt her down.
