Review: Netflix’s ‘Beef’ Season 1 Episode 7 “I Am a Cage”

Set eight months after episode six, episode seven, entitled “I Am a Cage,” is the episode with the most transitions, making it the most eventful episode. Just like episode six, episode seven contains the majority of the characters. This episode begins in one direction, and then, along with multiple plot twists, ends in an unexpected direction. Each twist and turn strives to pull emotion out of its viewers. Amy’s (Ali Wong) and Danny’s (Steven Yeun) lives have progressed significantly since episode six.

As Danny reaches his financial goals, Amy’s marital situation takes a turn for the worse. Danny claims his construction business is responsible for his sudden financial success, but the numbers don’t add up. This was brought up by Danny’s ex-girlfriend’s new husband, Edwin (Justin H. Min). Edwin visits Danny and asks him to join the illegal scheme he suspects they are doing, but Danny insists his business is legit and there is nothing he can do to help Edwin with a job. This scene comes as a shock, considering most of the show shows Edwin having the life Danny has always wanted. Edwin had the girl that Danny literally used to plan his future with; he had the house Danny wanted; and, he was the leader of the praise team at their church. However, now Danny is the leader of the praise team and owns a nicer house, and Edwin is having financial and marital issues along with a newborn baby.

Amy’s marital situation faces multiple obstacles after Amy’s husband, George (Joesph Lee), confesses that he had an emotional affair with Amy’s young employee, Mia (Mia Serafino). Who coincidentally is the person whose photos she used to catfish Danny’s younger brother, Paul (Young Mazino). George tries to downplay the situation by trying to explain it as a spiritual connection; however, Amy doesn’t humor him. Despite Amy being angry, her only reaction is to ask George follow-up questions. George confesses Amy’s patience with patience rather than guilt because he doesn’t know Amy had an affair as well that turned physical with Paul. Amy struggles with the news of George’s emotional affair, so she goes to talk to the therapist she and George go to for couples therapy by herself. However, she doesn’t tell her therapist about her affair.

Danny is still unaware of Paul’s relationship with Amy, until George invites Danny, who he believes is a man named Zane, to his house for a get-together. At first, Danny is hesitant because Amy could reveal his identity if she knows that he is who her husband has been hanging out with. However, he decides to go this time; his intentions aren’t to rattle Amy or get revenge; but to seek advice. After hearing George rave about Amy’s emotional growth and her progress with managing her depression, Danny realizes he can relate to Amy, and she might be able to help him. This scene furthers the idea that Amy and Danny are very similar, and if they met under different circumstances, they’d be good friends. At first, Amy thinks that Danny is messing with her, but when she realizes he is serious, she answers his questions, and for a second, they no longer seem to have issues until Danny discovers Amy is the person Paul had a relationship with.
