Just like episode four, episode five, entitled “Such Inward Secret Creatures,” adds a new, refreshing perspective. Unlike the previous episodes of Beef, the viewer gets a closer look at the struggles that the supporting characters experience. We learn about what is bothering Amy’s (Ali Wong) mother-in-law, Fumi (Patti Yasutake). Also, we learn that other characters are feeling lonely and unsatisfied with their lives, just like Amy and Danny (Steven Yeun). While Danny and Amy continue to make damaging decisions, their loved ones also make some of their own.
Danny takes the same approach to revenge as Amy by befriending someone close to her. He pretends to be someone he is not to get close to Amy’s husband, Geroge (Joesph Lee). He intentionally doesn’t know how he wants to use his newfound friendship with Geroge, so he talks to his cousin Isaac (David Choe) about the situation. Isaac would usually be on board for any shenanigans with Danny; however, Isaac is currently under house arrest, suffering the consequences of the last run-in with Amy. The last run-in with Amy has caused a rift in Danny and Isaac’s relationship, seeing as Isaac is in legal trouble and Danny is scot-free. Danny is hurt by his cousin’s reaction and feels discouraged until he talks with his cousin’s friends, and they all decide to rob Amy’s house. As Danny gets closer to George and reenters George and Amy’s home, Isaac’s friends go shopping for any necessary supplies.
While Danny and George’s relationship grows, Amy and George’s relationship digresses more and more as they both make immoral decisions. In the previous episodes, we’ve watched Amy make decisions that threaten her marriage. For the first time in this episode, we learn of the choices Geroge has made that will harm their marriage. This is not a spoiler alert; however, it does come as a shocker considering he is usually portrayed as the ideal husband who is simply underappreciated, and Amy is usually the one in their marriage who is the root of the issues. Showing the viewers another side of Geroge may answer some questions about how and why Geroge and Amy’s marriage got to be the way it is.
George is not the only character we see a new side of; Naomi’s (Ashley Park) home life is revealed for the first time in a very underwhelming way. This rings true for the lack of excitement she experiences in her personal life. We finally see why Naomi is so desperate to be Amy’s friend and why she took it to heart when Amy blew her off. In the scene when Naomi is in her walk-in closet, each of her next moves has a direct correlation to how she truly feels. She takes her pain from the rejection she feels from Amy and channels it into digging deeper into an incident that she thinks may be connected to Amy. In this episode, many things are uncovered about characters we were previously led to believe were unsuspicious, which leaves more questions and cliffhangers.
