Season four episode eight, entitled “Wow” of Barry, follows the aftermath of NoHo Hank’s (Anthony Carrigan) kidnapping of Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and John (Zachary Golinger). Hank tries to wave a white flag by offering Monroe (Stephen Root) Sally and John to lure in Barry (Bill Hader). Monroe agrees to this deal and heads over to meet Hank and wait for Barry. Sally and John overhear their conversation, and Sally asks Hank about what will happen to them. Hank leaves it up in the air by saying, “It’s not up to me.”
Meanwhile, Gene (Henry Winkler) stresses over being accused of manipulating Barry to kill Detective Janice (Paula Newsome). The district attorney (Charles Parnell) decides to reopen the Janice Moss murder case and announces that Gene is a suspect in a press conference. Janice’s father, Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom), also speaks at the press conference and says that he believes Gene put Barry up to it. Gene watches the press conference online in disbelief on his couch. Tom (Fred Melamed) watches with Gene, also in disbelief, and Gene stares at his computer with an exhausted look on his face.
As Sally and John anxiously wait to see what’s going to happen to them, John begins to ask Sally some questions about what the truth really is. Sally answers honestly, letting John know that she and Barry are fugitives wanted for murder. Sally tries to hold back tears while breaking the news to John; however, she can’t help but cry while confessing. We don’t really get to see John’s reaction to this news because he jumps up to console his mother, and then Noho’s men come in to take Sally away. Sally and John get separated as the men drag her away and hold John back from running. The two yell for each other during this whole interaction.
When a bloody dispute leaves Monroe shooting NoHo Hank, NoHo dies clutching onto the hand of the statue of Cristobal (Michael Irby). Meanwhile, Barry arrives ready to sacrifice his life for his family; however, it won’t be necessary because Monroe decides to let John and Sally go with Barry. When the family reunites, Barry takes Sally and John to a hotel instead of driving back home. While they lay in bed, Sally tells Barry about Gene and the district attorney reopening the case. Sally wants Barry to confess and save Gene. She tries to convince him to do the right thing; however, Barry disagrees and says that it’s not in God’s will.
In the morning, Barry is left in the hotel alone and cannot find Sally or John. He rushes over to Gene’s house to look for them, and when he gets there, Sally and John aren’t there. He talks to Tom, and Tom tries to convince him to turn himself in. Then, mid-conversation, Gene walks into the living room and shoots Barry twice.
The series ends with a time jump, and we get a glimpse of Sally and John’s new life without Barry. John lives his life as a normal teenager and goes to a regular high school, which Sally works at as the drama teacher. The two of them seem happy with their lives; this is the first time we’ve seen them be content with their lives. John gets permission to stay over with a friend, and he watches the film that is made about Barry and Gene for the first time. The episode closes with John liking and being satisfied with the film.
