Review: ‘Masters of The Air’ Season 1, Episode 3 “Part Three”

Previously on Masters of The Air “Part Two,” the Air Force boys had fun after having a rough couple of missions. They get assigned on a mission to Norway. In the beginning, things looked good, but shortly after, bombs started coming their way. Lt. Curtis (Barry Keoghan) decided to turn around and land safely as his plane got hit. Major Crosby (Anthony Boyle) got the chance to be their navigator, which resulted in him getting promoted to a full-time navigator for another crew.

The episode starts with the crew in a meeting. It looks like they’ll be on a new mission. Today’s mission has them going up in the air with three hundred and seventy-six “heavy bombers” and 240 fighters, the largest number ever existing on a mission. As they look at the map, everyone mutters out of worry. There are a lot of enemies in their path of destination to Regensburg. As they pass Regensburg, they’ll then land in Africa.

John “Bucky” Eagan (Callum Turner) is flying as reserve command pilot, while Gale “Buck” Cleven (Austin Butler) is flying as a passenger with Major Veal (James Frecheville). There’s tension when Gale discovers that John is in the backseat of another plane. The question is, did John get demoted?

Four hours until they reach Belgium, Gale’s plane is hit. Soon, they all are under enemy fire and forced to parachute from the sky. Baby Face (Oaklee Pendergast) gets stuck and Capt. Oran Petrich (Jojo Macari) starts to help get him out. But Oran, unable to do so, must leave Baby Face as the plane falls he gives up and leaves him as the plane falls quicker, getting closer to crashing into the ground.

Lt. Curtis’ plane gets hit, with his co-pilot getting hit as well. Lt. Curtis decides to land their plane so that his co-pilot doesn’t die. As he lands, it’s a hard one and they both die from the explosion of the crash.

After landing onto the ground, Oran makes his way to a home. He finds a girl and tells her that he’s an American soldier. She runs and grabs his father. Shortly afterward, he gets some food and as he’s eating, he gets disrupted, a gun getting pointed at him as a group of people stalks towards him. He gets threatened by the Germans who tell him that there’s a way for him to get back to England, but he has to abide by their rules.

Two hours until they get to Africa. Gale has to have his crew drop some weaponry off their plane, to make the weight go down to fly longer and safely to their destination. Eleven out of twenty-one planes made it to their destination.

Overall, this episode went by fast. There were a lot of casualties and it’s sad to see that Lt. Curtis didn’t make it. It was nice having Barry Keoghan as one of the characters, especially with how big he is right now in Hollywood. With all of the casualties, it was a nice touch to see the Band of Brothers within the mission and see how they all made sure to stick together. It will be interesting to see how “Part Four” will go, mostly with Capt. Petrich, who has to do dirty work with the Germans to get back to England. With the crew being in Africa, who will become their new friends? Will John and Gale fix their relationship?
