Review: ‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 1 “Ouroborus”

Disney Plus’s series Loki, Season 2 Episode 1, called “Ouroborus,” explores the aftermath of the death of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), resulting in the creation of the Multiverse and the rise of infinite Kangs (Jonathan Majors), He Who Remains’ variants, in each new universe. The episode begins with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) teleporting into a past TVA ruled by He Who Remains before he went into hiding. Because he was in the past TVA when He Who Remains was in charge, not the Time Keepers, Past Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Past Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) attempted to capture the Trickster God. Still confused about where he is, Loki asks Past Casey (Eugene Cordero) for help, believing he is the same Casey he befriended in the present-day TVA. However, Kang Loyalist Casey reported Loki’s whereabouts to the Kang TVA Hunters, which made Loki panic until Loki teleported, for unknown reasons, into the present-day TVA. Loki reunited with the Casey (Eugene Cordero) he befriended in Season 1 until he warps to another reality again.

In present-day TVA, Mobius M. Mobius and Hunter B-15 debate if they should reveal the truth regarding the dark secrets of the TVA that every TVA member used to be a variant until they were kidnapped and brainwashed. Later, Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal) arrives and tells Mobius and B-15 that they were summoned to the War Room to brief on the current situation: Infinite Timeline Branches and the truth of the TVA. In the War Room, General Dox (Kate Dickie) and Judge Gamble (Liz Carr) confront Mobius and B-15 for letting the Sacred Timeline to branch infinitely. However, they are deeply unsettled that the Time Keepers were fake and that everything they did in the TVA was a lie. B-15 manages to calm the entire room of the situation until Loki suddenly warps into the War Room and uses X-5’s time stick to prune a mural of the Time Keepers, revealing Kang’s mural. Everyone, except Loki, was shocked to see the true face of the TVA on the hidden mural. The War Room meeting concludes with Loki and Mobius leaving to investigate Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and her whereabouts. On the other hand, Hunter B-15 witnessed General Dox, still committed to the TVA’s mission to prune the branches and preserve the Sacred Timeline, and Dox order Hunter X-5 to find and capture Sylvie. Judge Gamble remains silent in shock because everything she did for the TVA and the Time Keepers was a lie.

Loki talks with Mobius regarding the events at the End of Time, Sylvie killing He Who Remains, and the Sacred Timeline branching to create the Multiverse. Also, Laufeyson told Mobius he traveled to a past TVA and confronted the Past Mobius. Mobius was confused as the TVA agent did not remember the encounter. Loki assumed He Who Remains wiped every TVA personnel’s memories of the events following the Time Keepers replacing him. In addition, Mobius tells Loki traveling to a past TVA is impossible, but Loki says it’s possible because he did travel to the past TVA. To investigate further, the two head to R&A to meet TVA agent Ouroboros “O.B.” (Ke Huy Quan), deducing Loki is going through “time-slipping,” a phenomenon caused by the excessive time branches.

To resolve Loki’s time-slipping condition, Ouroboros tells Mobius to use the Temporal Aura Extractor device, head to the Temporal Loom, and extract Loki from the time stream as the Trickster God simultaneously prunes himself. The reason is that when Loki prunes himself, he will be released from time, allowing the Time Aura Extractor to pull him back into the present, ending the time-slipping. Loki time slips into the future and encounters Sylvie before being pulled back to the present day after Mobius successfully pulls Laufeyson from the time stream. The episode ends with the Hunters going through a Time Door to hunt Sylvie. In the mid-credits scene, Sylvie visits a McDonald’s restaurant in a branched timeline in Broxton, Oklahoma, in 1982.

Loki and Mobius Meets Ouroborus

In Loki Season 2 Episode 1, Director Justin Benson, Director Aaron Moorhead, and Writer Eric Martin gave an excellent introduction for the season premiere. The threat of the Kangs across the Multiverse looms, with Loki and his allies having to fight them. Kang the Conqueror was introduced in Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantumania as an exiled Kang following his rebellion against the Council of Kangs for committing a horrible deed against the Conqueror. The Council of Kangs reigns each of the universes independently. However, all the Kangs have three leaders that command them: Immortus, Rama-Tut, and Centurion. The three are the greatest and strongest Kang variants due to their intelligence and power. In the first credits scene of Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantumania, the Council of Kangs gathers to convene on the possible threat of the Avengers to their Kang Dynasty across the Multiverse. Another credit scene shows Loki and Mobius in 1901 planning to confront the Kang variant Victor Timely, which the story will continue in Loki Season 2.
