Review: ‘Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 4, Episode 7 “The Ghosts of Whitestone” [SPOILERS]

Episode 7 builds on the emotional tides of “We Are His Blood,” adding more tension as our heroes come face-to-face with their greatest fears and temptations. The episode is quite similar to another animated series’ haunted house motif — X-Men ’97’s season 1, episode 3 “Fire Made Flesh.” In it, a supreme evil is revealed, feeding off our protagonists insecurities.

After Percival discovers a secret lair inside Whitestone, our two couples descend toward the unknown. Periled by past trauma and future uncertainty, each is tested: Percy is attacked by clones of a former beast; Keyleth is tempted by a tale of potential curse cure; Vex meets a tortured undead witch; and Vax is given an offer hard to refuse.

Eventually, Vex and her new friend outwit the enemy. Playing on its darkest fears, Vex pierces their head with an inflamed arrow. But to their dismay, the creature regenerates as its a member of the Children of Truth – reborn  immortal. Before escaping, it tells Vax to think about their offer.

In the aftermath, Grog and Pike return with news of her relative’s fate. Vax reveals how all these incidents are connected to the return of The Whispered One, who plans to ascend as a god. Pike exclaims there’s only one way to kill a god and they need to find Scanlon.

“The Ghosts of Whitestone” seamlessly packs a lot of information in a taut, spellbinding half-hour. The pacing and writing are excellent, juggling each character’s situation without feeling confusing or rushed. We sympathize with each character, seeing the human behind the hero and feelings they may hide in the shadowy crevices of their psyche.

The antagonist is spectacular, able to speak a little bit of truth within their riddle. They appear to be a tremendous foe for our heroes, who have yet to fully understand the severity of the dilemma upon them.
