Review: ‘Invincible’, Season 3, Episode 7

Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson)

As season three of Invincible moves closer to its finale, more relationships develop as Debbie and Paul go steady, and Rex and Rae grow closer after their first date. While everything in Mark’s world seems to be at momentary peace, this quickly changes as it’s revealed that Angstrom Levy lived after his and Mark’s gruesome battle. As Mark walked away from Angstrom’s body, he was quickly taken away by another species known as The Technicians through a portal he created with the last of his energy.

On Earth, Mark stresses over meeting Eve’s parents. The two bond over their parent issues, though this is interrupted by Angstrom’s return. Eve gets a call on her company phone about multiple attacks around the city. The prison Mark and Eve have a contract with is quickly taken down as Mark meets a villain who’s all too familiar to him.

Debbie watches the news and sees that every major city is being taken over. Oliver quickly takes note and tries to rush to assist, but Debbie stops him. While she wants to keep him safe, she realizes that being at home is dangerous for both of them. Debbie advises Oliver to stay close to Mark as she hides out with Paul.

Angstrom’s attack reaches Cecil and his headquarters as they assess the situation. It took multiple robot soldiers and Donald to deter this attack, showing how strong Angstrom is with his new allies. These allies have no pattern or plan, showing their power and unpredictability.

Oliver takes to the streets to help pedestrians as buildings crumble throughout the city. he looks to the sky and sees a superhero flying through the clouds above. Assuming it’s Mark, Oliver follows behind, only to find out it’s one of Angstrom’s henchmen. Their fight is taken to the ground while Mark fights alongside Eve, both barely keeping up against Angstrom’s army.

Angstrom meets with his new allies to further discuss their plans to take over the world. While he elaborates, his allies quickly turn on him, refusing to take orders. this poses a huge threat, as Angstrom throws each being into a portal, imprisoning them in another dimension. Without his army, Levy decided to take his revenge into his own hands.

Mark leaves the hospital as Cecil announces that he’s found Angstrom. Not only does he have interdimensional power, but he also has technological powers to act as his muscle. While Levy is fast and throws multiple portals toward Mark, Mark is quicker and more dexterous as he knows what would happen if he falls into that portal.

Angstrom uses multiple drones to push Mark into a portal, but Mark punches his way through the thousands of them, reaching Angstrom. Before Mark can execute Levy, he escapes into a portal that cuts off his hand. The Technicians do not welcome him but rather force him to be a slave because he failed his mission.

Knowing that Angstrom will be back for revenge, Cecil advises that they will prepare and grow a bigger team. The city is covered in dead bodies and blood while survivors are being recovered.

This battle forces Eve into the hospital while the Earth is still being taken over. Distraught, Mark stays by her side and out of battle in fear of the possibility of losing her. There, Mark meets Eve’s parents, Adam and Betsy Wilkins. While Adam is reserved, Betsy shows appreciation to Mark for visiting Eve.

While Mark takes a moment to breathe and mourn, the world gets a long-awaited visit from the Viltrumite army. With this, the finale is expected to have a massive battle with Mark fighting the Viltrumites. As multiple heroes are dead or hospitalized, Mark is Earth’s only hope. So far this season has been leaving audiences on the edge of their seats, captivated by the immersive storytelling and bone-breaking action. Audiences can expect an action-packed finale, similar to this thrilling episode.
