Episode five of Invincible’s newest season continues with Titan’s subplot from episode three. Mister Lui, in need of assistance, goes to Titan and asks him to break Multi-Paul out of prison. Despite Mister Lui’s influence, Titan refuses, explaining he doesn’t want to pursue that business.
The opening of this episode reveals that Titan is a devoted husband and father. As he walks his daughter to school, many acknowledge his presence and show their respect. However, once he drops his daughter off, Isotope notifies him that Dupli-Paul has made a grueling attempt to escape prison.
Paul duplicates himself until his clone’s bodies overpack the cell, bursting the cell door open. While this attempt was clever, he was quickly detained once more and is now shackled with a neck brace that restricts his powers. Kate attempts to have him reformed, although he’s adamant about not wanting to work for killers.
Mister Lui visits Titan, again as Paul’s attempt to escape fails. Titan recommends letting the ‘heat’ die down and waiting before making any new plans. Even though the prison is now on high alert Lui demands Titan to break out Paul. Titan refuses once more, but Lui threatens his daughter, making it known that he knows Titan has a daughter and knows her name and location.
Meanwhile, Mark and Eve grow closer as they begin spending the night at Mark’s. While watching over Oliver, Mark is notified of a break-in attempt at the prison. Upon arrival, Mark finds that it’s Titan. Titan explains the situation to Mark, and that not only is his family in danger, but the whole town. If Titan is arrested, someone worse will take his spot, and all of his hard work for the community and its safety will be no longer. Despite being transparent with Mark, Mark would rather take Titan straight to jail. Titan then immediately blends in with the crowd and escapes.
Lui quickly barges into Titan’s office to find that Titan never attained Paul. Overcome with rage, Lui begins to take the form of a dragon, and Titan’s henchman, Isotope, switches sides out of fear of Lui. His large, reptilian body takes up the entire building, ultimately pushing Titan out of the tower’s window. Lui has his workers watch his human body while he makes his way to the prison to break Paul out himself.
Mark and Eve are quickly notified that Lui is approaching the prison. There, Lui quickly attacks and overwhelms the two. Despite Mark fighting more vigorous opponents, Lui’s stature and durability make it difficult for the duo. Mark makes a final punch to the dragon’s head, only for it to heal in seconds. At this point, Mark is pinned down while Eve is handling the prisoners. In this hopeless moment, Isotope betrays’ Lui, and has his body hostage.
Mark quickly finds out that he’s been used like a pawn for Titan. Mark was only a distraction for Titan to win against Lui. This episode reveals how Mark still has a long way to go before he can save the earth. While there are interdimensional and interstellar battles, he still has his hands full with Earth’s average villains. Mark not only needs to be a hero but also a mentor to Oliver as his powers grow equal to Mark’s. Since this small subplot has closed, hopefully, audiences will see more developments in Mark’s personal life in the next episode.
