Review: ‘Industry’ Season 3 Episode 2 “Smoke & Mirrors”

There is a technical problem at Pierpoint as all computers are down and no numbers are running or charting. This is world-ending news for Lumi and many of the financial analysts are trying to quell the fears of other clients seeing the stock plummet and begging to pull out. Henry is freaking out in the face of Robert and many people are calling from newspapers asking about why all of this is happening. Robert is trying to warn him not to talk to the press, but to stay afloat and ahead of the issue.

Harper sees this and decides to capitalize on this failure. Petra, Anna’s partner, asks Harper why Eric called her nine times to warn them she was not a good hire for their company. Harper simply says she went against the grain and Eric did not like that. She makes it very clear that she hired Harper because she wanted an inside look at the desk at Pierpoint and knew Harper was valuable. As tensions are getting high with the Lumi stock, Petra asks who she should call at Pierpoint to mine a trade price down. Harper can get this done easily and knows exactly which trader needs to give her a price. Harper gets called out by her boss Anna for trading with Petra and makes her suspicious of her intentions.Anna tells Harper that she’s everything that everyone said she was.

Eric Tao is under pressure at the firm as the phones are going off all at once. Harper calls him and can’t bring herself to say anything. The story between them has always been an uneven power dynamic, Eric purely with his pointed finger, but Harper has gained most of hers through wit and cunning trade deals. Robert is then seen back at Nicole’s house, and her daughter is there. He lies and says he needs to find some paperwork as the daughter tells him how psychotically selfish her mother was.Robert tries to comfort her in a moment of grief and she makes a move on him, telling him she just needs to be touched. He finds out that she is only 15 and you can feel the guilt swell from the screen. He is even more confused about Nicole’s death.

As his company’s stock crashes, Henry has gone into hiding at his company’s offices. Yasmin and Robert have to fix the public narrative by starting another rumor. Yasmin tells the press that she and Henry may be a couple to fix the fodder of the stock. Yasmin pulls off a successful tip with the paparazzi.  The idea works, and the stock flattens with no profit or loss as the company gains perception in the media with the rumor. Yasmin had hoped this would impress Eric, however, Eric still would not scrape away the nepotism label from her forehead. As he tells her that she is simply hungry to work for her own gain, he urges her to watch her ethics and red lines.

Anna’s partner has one more talk with Harper and tells her that she likes ingenuity in an employee, but asks her how she was ahead of the pricing. Harper explains that because the stocks were oil and gas, Pierpoint had a 15-minute edge on pricing. Petra is stern and tells her they do not need to cheat in this business to get ahead, just better than everyone else. She fears personal animus with a former employer and tells her that she knows that she did not graduate from college. This is something that Harper can not live down even if she tried. She will always be brought back to where she failed first.

An incredible scene lives at the end of the episode. Henry meets Yasmin for dinner and tells her what her father said about Yasmin behind her back, calling her a “pathetic attention-seeking whore” but not to blame her for her father’s sins. He follows this up with a whiplashing announcement that he had a word with his father and that he told him to take down the article from publication. Yasmin has officially gone from offended to eternally grateful in seconds. She turns down his hit on her and accepts the pulled article and an incredibly rare bottle of merlot that Henry retrieved from an English King’s grave.

We see that Yasmin is a lot more disillusioned and unsure of her identity than we thought as the last scene is an urging fight between Yasmine and her father, Charles. This is a flashback of Yasmin catching her father with the pregnant woman on the yacht. During their argument, he tells her he’s fleeing his criminal proceedings. Things get physical when he pins her down, telling Yasmin that she has everything because of him, and without it, she is nothing and will be nothing. We anxiously await to see how Charles’s criminal proceedings and investigation for embezzeling money from investors for his wealth this season. Also the growth of Yasmine as we see if she stands her ground and never goes back to her fathers wallet.
