Previously on HBO’s House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra dealt with the Tumbleton occupation while Daemon had a small reunion with his daughter, Rhaena. Aegon and Larys assumed new identities at Rook’s Rest while Alicent discovered Helaena’s secret. And the real Prince Daeron witnesses Ormund Hightower’s true intentions. 

This episode keeps the momentum of revenge and loyalty that’s been shown throughout this season. Episode 5 revolves around the consequences of actions and decision-making, along with conflicts surrounding secrets and exposures. It also continues to balance the political drama with its quieter moments. We see this happening with characters like Rhaenyra, Lord Ormund, and even Ser Criston Cole. We see some secrets revealed, while there are others that are still hidden away from others. 

With that, one theme that stood out in this episode is secrets and lies. House of the Dragon has always done a great job of showing how far people are willing to go to protect secrets. One character we see that with is the witch, Alys. She continues to lie about Aemond’s whereabouts to the soldiers looking for him. We also see that with Alicent, who lies for protection and safety. 

Family remains one of the emotional cores of House of the Dragon, especially paired with sacrifice. In this episode, we see a strain on the relationship between Alicent and her daughter Haelena, which then turns into what we know is a strong bond. The relationship dynamics continue to evolve in interesting ways, allowing nearly every major character growth. But with Alicent and Haelena, we see just how far Alicent is willing to go to not only protect her  daughter, but the bounds her trust for her is willing to extend. The two of them sacrifice a lot. 

Leadership continues being a strong theme for this season, as we see a balance of wanting leadership and actually leading, from Rhaenyra, of course, along with Lord Ormund, Daeron, and Aegon. While Daemon assists and remians confidant in Rhaenyra during her struggling time as queen, Lord Ormund is highly confident that Daeron will be king. Meanwhile, we see Aegon hiding his identity while also trying to use his title to his advantage. 

Overall, this was a really good episode. It had a bit of action and revenge, along with a good number of emotional scenes, with many characters having heart-to-hearts, along with vulnerability. Fabien Frankel did a wonderful job in this episode as Ser Criston Cole. We got an opportunity to see a side of him we haven’t seen yet this season. What’s to come in Episode 6?
