Review: Harry Bosch Takes On Double Homicide in Season Seven Episode Four of Amazon’s ‘Bosch’

Well, things just got seriously interesting. Season seven episode four of Amazon’s Bosch, entitled ‘Triple Play,’ wastes no time getting into the nitty gritty as the episode kicks off with a double, potentially triple, homicide. What episode three may have lacked in action, episode four makes up for tenfold.

Remember Vincent Franzen (Reed Diamond, Dollhouse)? The white-collar crime client that ran a multi-million-dollar Ponzi scheme and was represented by defense attorney Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers, Austin Powers)? Well, spoiler alert, he’s dead. Kaput. Episode four kicks off with a masked intruder sneaking out of his house, stealing his laptop, and leaving Franzen and his secret girlfriend behind in a bloody mess. Talk about a game changer! To really heat things up, this mysterious masked intruder also paid a visit to Chandler’s house and shot her, but take heart – there’s a chance she might survive.

This action came at the perfect time. Right when things we’re starting to reach a plateau and move a bit slow, Bosch did what it does best and hit us with a twist when we we’re least expecting it. The Franzen case seemed so unique and even a little random that it was hard to tell how on Earth it was ever going to be relevant to the rest of the story. But now, Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver, Lost) is involved with the investigation and his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz, The Walking Dead) was the first person to find Chandler’s body, making her a major point of contact in the case. Jeez, this is getting juicy.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Bosch and Maddie’s dynamic unfolds throughout the rest of the season. This is the most Maddie has ever been involved in an investigation, and Bosch fears for her but let’s her tell her own story and doesn’t interrupt when she’s questioned by the police. Their interactions are some of the rare moments that viewers get to see Bosch be tender, and now his vulnerability is truly being held under a microscope.

Meanwhile, the episode tackles a serious issue: sexual harassment in the LAPD office. A photo begins to circulate of Lt. Billets (Amy Aquino, ER) photoshopped over a nude image with an anti-LGBT phrase scribbled across it. It’s ridiculously sexist and Lt. Billets is out for blood. Billets delivers one of the most hardcore lines to have ever been said on the show:

“I want to find who did this and string them up by their scrotums with fish hooks.”

OUCH! Hell yes, Billets. Every woman that has ever experienced this kind of harassment felt that.

However, she’s facing a lot of flack for filing a formal report to investigate who is perpetuating this behavior. Lt. Don Thorne (Mark Rolston, The Shawshank Redemption) thinks she’s being petty and even has the nerve to say “Let’s be honest, Billets, you rub some people the wrong way.” Blaming the victim for the way she’s being harassed? What an a*shole. Lt. Billets deserves better and won’t stop until she finds the culprits. Get ‘em, Billets!

Now that the action has ramped up, the stage is set for Bosch to not only solve an arson case, but hunt down the hitman who wanted Franzen and Chandler dead. We wait with bated breath to find out what happens next!
