The third episode of the original streaming series Ms. Marvel hit the Disney+ platform and continued the story of the new and rising ranks of superhero Night Light, or a better name that is a work in progress. Entitled “Destined,” Kamala is still reeling from the events of her attempt at safely rescuing a young boy at the local Eid celebration and gets the opportunity to learn more about Aisha from Kamran and his mother Najma.
After taking shelter with Kamran and his mother, Kamala is introduced to the full group of other beings called the Djinn that are a part of the Noor dimension which Kamala is actually a part of herself. During the partition, Kamala’s ancestor Aisha was with Najma and the fellow Djinn as she was a part of their group. However, upon the discovery of the bangle, the group got separated from Aisha which prohibited the Djinn to return to their dimension. Kamala is given the notion that she is the only one that can assist the group to get home and agrees to help out in their cause, but wants more time and Kamran grants her this wish.
In the meantime, the wedding day of Kamala’s brother Aamir and Tyesha fast approaches while Bruno is worried about this whole ordeal that is rising quickly. Additionally, he informs his best friend that he is going to do the early immersion program at Cal Tech, but wants to make sure that Kamala is going to be safe and okay before doing so. Nakia, on the other hand, has won the seat on the Mosque board, yet vents frustration to Kamala that the DODC agents arrived at the mosque, lacking respect for the property, in search of the young superhero.
On the wedding day, the ceremony goes as planned until Kamran unveils that his mother and the Djinn crew are in the midst of arriving at the wedding to fastrack their return home and will do so in any means necessary regardless of Kamala’s safety. Kamran arrives at the wedding and warns Bruno (or Brian to him) and Kamala of the impending issue and wants to clear out the wedding. Kamala rings the fire alarm as the crowd scatters, and the Djinn fast approach. A battle ensues where new pieces of Kamala’s powers are revealed. During this, Bruno gets hurt while also Kamran is pushed from a ledge during a struggle against one of the Djinn. When hope seems to be running out, the DODC arrives and blasts the Djinn and captures the individuals while Bruno and Kamala escape only for Nakia to stumble upon her friend being the mysterious hero of Jersey City. Simultaneously, Kamala receives a facetime from Sana, her grandmother, revealing that she saw the vision of a train that Kamala saw during the struggle and urges her to visit her immediately.
The third episode of Ms. Marvel finally saw a truly villainous force arise within the story. While the first two episodes dealt with the realization of powers and building the story world of the Khan family and Jersey City, the third episode finally completed the reveal that there are unlying sinister forces that the show’s hero Kamala will ultimately have to square off with. The episode itself was rife with good humor and tasteful scenes particularly during the wedding ceremony and reception in addition to Bruno’s insecurity when dealing with Kamran and Kamala’s frustration with the coined nickname Night Light. The show continues to find its footing and now with the inclusion of the antagonists, Kamala’s plight will grow as she begins her origin story leading to fun opportunities to explore in the three remaining episodes.
