Review: Disney+’ ‘What If’ Season 2 Episode 6 “What if Kahhori Reshaped the World?”

Season two episode six of What If, entitled “What if Kahhori Reshaped the World?” depicts the journey of Kahhori (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs) getting back to her tribe after being stuck in another portal. After the distruction of Asgard (Jason Marsden), a new wonder from the an ember from the past, the Tesseract found a new home. This new home was Earth. The portal was created by the Tesseract crash landing on Earth and this is the conduit of Kahhori and her ancestors’ powers. Kahhori is a Mohawk woman who must learn to be strong to return to her younger brother, Wáhta (Kiawentiio), and save her people. Before her journey begins, Kahhori and her brother Wáhta play in the village and go past where they’re allowed to go into the woods. Kahhori and Wáhta stumble upon what they think is the forbidden lake they’ve heard about and a skeleton. They decide to rush home, and when they reach their village, they find it has been set on fire, and they’re Spanish intruders who are killing their people.

Kahhori and Wáhta try their best to hide; however, one of the Spanish soldiers spots them, and a group of soldiers begins chasing them. Kahhori and Wáhta run as fast as they can, and as they are running, they fall through the ground into a cave. When they get on their feet and walk through the cave, they discover the real forbidden lake. The lake glistens blue, and before they can fully process that the legend is true, the soldiers arrive. Kahhori and Wáhta split up and hide, and the soldiers are mesmerized by the lake until Wáhta slightly moves and is found. Kahhori comes out of hiding to try to distract the soldiers so Wáhta can get away; however, this doesn’t work when Kahhori is shot by a soldier and falls into the lake as Wáhta is held back by a couple of soldiers.

Kahhori slowly sinks further into the lake with her eyes closed, then, all of a sudden, she is woken up and plummets into a new portal at the bottom of the lake. The portal looks just like her world; it’s a similar forest and village, except there are glimpses of blue light everywhere. The people in this portal have blue markings that glow and special powers they get from the land. The people in this portal are happy and collect gems that contain the spirits from the lake. Kahhori quickly learns that everyone in the village goes hunting together regularly for the gems; even though it is Kahhori’s first time hunting, she collects the most gems out of everyone. Even though Kahhori is determined to get back to Wáhta, she begins to like her new life in this new portal with all of the powers she has.

Kahhori’s happiness to be in a new place quickly fades when a group of soldiers get transported into the portal. This infuriates Kahhori, and she tries to kill one of the soldiers. The people in the village do not agree with this, and Kahhori yells at them. She then gets enough strength to bring the opening of the portal down to her level, which no one has ever been able to do, and she leaves. However, before leaving, she tries to convince the people in the portal to go with her and help their people fight against the soldiers with their powers. At first, they all stay behind and leave her to fight alone. Then, right when Kahhori needs help, they all show up to fight. They win against the soldiers, then transport to Spain and force the Queen to agree to peace. Right as the queen is on her knees and Kahhori is explaining to her the agreement, Strange Supreme shows up and tells her that he has been looking for her for a long time across the multiverse.

The visuals in this episode were very cinematically pleasing. The scene of a sunny morning was depicted so well you could almost feel the warmth from the screen. The sun glistening through the leaves as Kahhori and Wáhta walked through the woods was also visually pleasing. It helped to keep the viewer engaged by making the outdoors look as realistic as possible.
