The season two finale brings viewers full circle, as we learn why Diarra was wading through the waters of those underground tunnels. After burying the sheriff’s body, she solves the final clue, which reveals access to Duckett’s gold as closer to home. She, Danger and Booker discover the treasure, but not before Booker betrays her.
In his attempt to steal the gold, Booker dies when the tunnel collapses, and Danger and Diarra barely escape. Thinking all is lost, Diarra quickly pivots: she convinces Swa to work on freeing Chris, while the Ghetto Goonies discover a second stash of gold hidden in the Downtown Yacht Club.
To gain access, they infiltrate T’s friend’s wedding and prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime heist. But nothing goes according to plan. The bride’s gang-affiliated relatives invite Cartier, who wants a cut of the treasure. And as rumors of the event spread, Pump arrives unannounced, despite Harley telling him to stay away.
Tensions between the multiple factions hit a peak, erupting in a massive shootout when Pump realizes Diarra is “the teacher” responsible for his aunt Velvet’s death. Bullets fly as Cartier shoots Pump, leaving Diarra to turn on her maternal instincts. Luckily, Danger skillfully kills Cartier and the goonies live to see another day.
Back at home, the team has several revelations. First, Diarra realizes the identity of the second Coney killer: Lisa. She accidentally killed her boss, pushing Booker to do everything to protect her. Aja realizes Harley is the Chief, and seeks to end her affiliation with Diarra. Harley recruits Danger as his new lieutenant. And T and Diarra discover Duckett’s treasure was liquid gold with access to a creek with a purity content worth billions.
Swa proves Chris’s innocence, who returns home. Diarra is prepared to let him down easy when he reveals he rather get married. It’s not what she expected, but she doesn’t object the notion.
Season two closes with great potential for a third, establishing new storylines for each character that can coincide with a brand new mystery. The writing remains impressive, the performances strong and the balance of its multiple genres nimble.
