Review: ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 1, Episode 9 “Touched By An Angel”

Previously on Showtime’s Dexter: Resurrection, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) tries to kill Al (Eric Stonestreet), only to find that he had left the city early. Charley (Uma Thurman) expresses her concerns about Red to Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage). Dexter almost kills Elsa’s (Emilia Suarez) landlord, but is stopped by  Angel (David Zayas). Detective Claudette (Kadia Saraf) discovers that Angel is retired, and the Bay Harbor Butcher case has been closed for years.

The episode begins right where the previous episode left off, with Dexter and Harrison (Jack Alcott) at dinner, and Leon finding them. Dexter introduces Leon to Harrison before talking to him privately. Leon asks him if Harrison knows about his secret, but he doesn’t say anything. Leon tells him that Charley is concerned that he may be messing with the group and not being who he says he is. Leon still doesn’t think Dexter’s shady, but wants to know more about his personal life, so that he can be more trusted.

Dexter tells Harrison about the group and Leon’s secret lifestyle. He also tells him about Ronald Schmidt and everything that’s happened since then. While they’re walking in the city, Angel is following them.

The next day, Harrison is at work when his colleague asks if he wants to make extra money working in catering for Leon’s Annual Gala. Harrison hesitates, not wanting anything to do with it. His boss comes and tells him that there’s a room service request. He goes to the room, and it’s Charley. She confronts him about his last name not being the same as Dexter’s. The two of them talk, Harrison lying about his childhood and his relationship with his dad. Afterwards, he calls his dad and gives him every detail of the interaction. Dexter tells him that he has to stay with him for the time being.

Dexter sneaks into Charley’s home and finds a glass with Harrison’s fingerprint. He also discovers  Charley’s sick mother. He finds Charley’s location and sneaks into her car. When she enters, he quickly wraps barbed wire around her neck, like Ronald Schmidt. He makes her drive off, and he begins to question her. She tells him that Leon made her question Harrison. She pulls the car over, and he leaves.

Claudette questions Angel about his identity and his intentions regarding Dexter, Harrison, and the Bay Harbor Butcher. She tells him to leave the city and that if he’s not gone the following day, she will have him arrested.

Dexter comes home to find Harrison and Gigi there. While Gigi’s in the bathroom, Dexter updates him on Charley, and he tells Harrison to stay at Gigi’s for the night.

Instead of being upset that Dexter attacked Charley, Leon finds it intriguing to see the wound on her neck. He tells Charley not to worry about Dexter, that he’s still in charge. As they’re talking, Dexter gives him a call. The two of them plan to meet at Leon’s penthouse in the morning.

The next day, Angel goes to Leon’s mansion. He asks to speak to Leon, but the guard tries to move him out of the building. Angel decides to fight the guards off, and Charley comes to intervene, grabbing Angel. The two of them go to Leon’s office. Angel gives them Red’s real identity, Dexter Morgan.

Dexter goes to Leon’s penthouse and is welcomed into Leon’s secret vault.  Here, Leon calls him by his real name, and Charley comes from behind, pointing a gun at Dexter. They enter the vault, and Dexter finds Angel strapped down to his kill table. Leon puts two and two together, realizing that he truly is the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Leon proposes Dexter as his benefactor. He hands Dexter a knife and tells him to kill Angel. Dexter pretends to kill him, but cuts the straps and saves Angel. Angel then attacks Dexter, choking him, until Leon kills Angel. Leon and Charley run out of the vault, while Dexter stays, watching his old friend die.

Overall, this was a really good episode. The only reason Dexter didn’t kill Angel is that they were once friends, and it wasn’t part of his code. It was very nostalgic to see David Zayas return as Angel Batista, as he was a huge part of the original Dexter series. Now that Angel has been killed and Dexter’s identity has been revealed, what will happen in the season finale?
