Review: ‘Devil May Cry” Season 1, Episode 8 “A River of Blood”

The final episode of season one of Devil May Cry first reveals that the White Rabbit, who was shown to be human and Mary’s childhood friend, is alive. Meanwhile, DARKCOM is cleaning up the scene of dead demons as Dante and Mary decide on how to keep their dimension safe. The two ultimately decide to keep it with Dante, as it was initially his. Dante refuses to work for DARKCOM, as the vice president’s agenda is morally vague.

Before DARKCOM takes Dante into custody, a building-sized demon attacks. This demon appears to be the Rabbit, as it has similar tubes embedded in its chest, resembling those of the Rabbit. The White Rabbit seemed to have eaten numerous demons, making the demon blood within him increase his power and size.

Dante teams up with Mary and DARKCOM as they fight this demon, although bullets do not affect it. Dante fights with the Rabbit, leading to a sword duel. Dante continuously aims for his valves, although he is unable to reach them effectively. As Dante is down, Enzo steps in to help, but is quickly killed during his endeavor.

Dante is now filled with rage as one of his friends dies in his arms. He continues to fight the White Rabbit, though he keeps increasing in size and power. Mary makes a surprise appearance with an armed helicopter. As she berates the demon with ammo, she picks up Dante so that they can escape before his blood is used to open up another portal.

The demon catches up to the helicopter, dragging Dante out of it. As the amulet falls off Dante, the demon uses the blood and amulet to open the portal. Dante laughed, explaining that the Rabbit doesn’t have his brother’s blood. This is quickly clarified as the Rabbit reveals a vial of Vergil’s blood, shocking Dante.

As the White Rabbit opens the portal, the sky turns red as the earth becomes infested with hungry demon creatures. Mary, wounded, uses her last demon-killing ammunition aimed towards the demon. As it stabs Dante, Mary gets a clean shot at the Rabbit. Despite his wounds, Dante turns on his “demon mode,” determined to put an end to this and find his brother.

Dante lands a clean shot on the Rabbit. The Rabbit once again warns Dante, explaining that he is not his enemy. He explains that Dante will never be truly accepted because he is a demon, making him unlovable. Unfazed, Dante lands a killing shot on the Rabbit, allowing the portals to be closed once more.

Dante and Mary come to terms, playing on the idea of forming a team. While this exciting moment is reminiscent of the video games, Mary sedates Dante, explaining that his blood and sword are too dangerous for this world. Before she could hand him over to DARKCOM, an explosion was heard in the distance.

The explosion is revealed to be the opening of another portal. The Vice President from DARKCOM began to use the White Rabbit’s portal device to open a door to hell to take the war to them. He begins to drop bombs in these portals and sends soldiers to hunt demons.

Over time, DARKCOM establishes a base in the other dimension, imprisoning demons.  Despite their growth in power, a single demon infiltrates this base and releases the numerous demon hostages. This demon vows that their king will protect them, and reveals himself to be Vergil.

The season finale of Devil May Cry delivers a high-stakes entry that balances intense action with shocking revelations. Episode 8 elevates the series’ narrative while reintroducing the White Rabbit in a new monstrous form, pushing Dante to physical and emotional limits. The episode masterfully comes to a climax as Dante, Mary, and the organization DARKCOM battle the Rabbit, culminating in tragic losses and confrontations. Vergil’s final reveal that he is alive and leading a demon uprising sets the stage for a larger conflict, promising family clashes in the confirmed second season. With its blend of moral complexity and deepening lore, this episode serves as a satisfying close to Season 1, capturing the spirit of the franchise while pushing it into bold new territory.
