Review: ‘Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy’ Season 1, Episode 3 “Samuel and Randy”

Continuing through the series, Joe speaks to the press about John Wayne Gacy and the case. We also see the detectives ripping up Gacy’s floors to search the crawlspace for more bodies. In the coroner’s office, a young boy is examined, and determined not to be Rob Piest. The coroner tells the detectives that he was found a short distance away from another boy in the river.

We then go back a few years to Uptown Chicago, 1972, where we meet our next victims, Samuel and Randy. Sam goes to visit John, who tells him that they have a lead on a psychiatrist, and will set an eval for after the arraignment. Sam also lets John know that he’s not going to get out of prison, and the one thing he could do is get him in a mental ward to keep him alive.

At the hearing, Sam makes the defense statement, the judge denies John bail, and Sam lets the judge know about the petition to allow John to be put in a psychiatric hospital, for the duration of the trial. The court agrees to John’s upset, who thought he would be going home. At Gacy’s home, Tovar is made aware that the lowest possible number of bodies is 5, while the highest is twenty-four.

After finding another body, news about the victims on the case plays on the radio, stating that many were likely male prostitutes or homosexuals looking for a good time. Another detective says they were fairies who brought it on themselves, much to the anger of Tovar. Before Tovar can do anything, the cop walks out, after which Allen and Tovar discover the body was bound to another one.

At Sam’s Christmas party, Sam reveals to his wife and father that Bob Motta is going to be his co-counsel, because of his evening speech. Sam gets a call from John, who asks to speak to Sam’s father, to apologize that vandals messed up his car. John then shows a guard a trick. The trick in question was how he tied the knot around the victim’s neck, using the guard’s hand for demonstration, after the guard couldn’t see how he did it. We then see more footage at the end of the real investigation, the press hearing from the beginning of the episode, and Sam and Randy, Gacy’s victims.

This episode was good, but did have one slightly weird editing choice. When Randy and Sam were walking and talking to each other through the dark streets of Chicago, you could hear a certain meme scream (you would know if you heard it). It was lower in volume and in the background, so it wasn’t like it took away from the episode, but it did stick out and mess with the scene a bit. It was unexpected, and funny. The back and forth between 78 and 72 might have happened a bit too many times, but that wasn’t a huge deal, and didn’t detract from the episode completely. Once again, it was a good episode overall.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
