Review: ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2, Episode 5 “The Grand Design”

Season 2, episode 5 of Daredevil involves the Task Force attempting to hunt down our masked vigilante. We get a couple of flashbacks, and tragedy occurs. This was an interesting episode with great parallels between the flashbacks and Matt’s current predicament. There are also parallels between Kingpin and Daredevil’s journeys, which have been shown throughout the show. They both share some similarities, except one fights for the greater good, while the other (though he may love the city) fights with backroom deals, corruption, and murder.

In terms of action, there wasn’t much, but this episode honestly didn’t need it. This was more about exploring the characters’ emotions and morals, as well as a bit of backstory, including just how involved our villains pasts were. This episode also didn’t feel as slow as the last episode did, despite being around the same length. There’s a moment of predictability within the episode, but surprisingly the narrative subverts expectations. With almost a full 180 moment, it delivers a dark twist, that might make you laugh a bit because of its shock-value. It’ll certainly bring out some reaction. It felt like it was from a mobster movie, especially with the line that was said.

Right now, it feels like the show is starting to get more serious, however, it doesn’t feel like it’s much closer to a definitive conclusion. With only three more episodes left, there still feels like there is a good amount of work left to do to topple Kingpin’s criminal empire.

Overall, the episode was pretty good, with somewhat of a faster pace than the previous episode. The writing was strong, focusing on morals and characters’ backstory. Its peak explored the characters’ emotions and feelings, especially after tragedy.

I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
