Review: ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 1, Episode 2 “Optics”

Previously on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) was killed by Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) to get back at Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) aka Daredevil. Later, there’s a sentencing hearing against Bullseye and Matt speaks as a witness. We learn that since the death of their friend, Matt and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) don’t have a close friendship anymore, and Karen doesn’t live in New York. Matt gets set up on a blind date with Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), which goes well. Before Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), aka Kingpin, wins the election for mayor, he and Matt meet up, discussing their secret identities and warning each other that if either of them steps out of line, they will do something about it.

The next episode starts with Fisk’s first speech as mayor. It’s New Year’s Eve and Matt is listening to the television. He tunes it out and listens to people outside, a lot of people are still upset that Fisk won the election.

Next, we see a man trying to help someone getting attacked by two men in the subway station. He fights them off, allowing the victim to escape. One of the attackers lunges to punch the stranger and he dodges out of the way. The attacker falls on the transit track and is killed by a passing subway. The two attackers happen to be undercover police officers, so our unknown hero gets arrested.

Fisk is in his office with political strategist Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara), preparing for his visit to the firehouse. She mentions to him that although younger New Yorkers seem to like him, his wife Vanessa’s (Ayelet Zurer) absence will have a hard time getting through to the older part of the state.

We next see Matt at a police station. After hearing police beating a suspect, Matt intervenes and meets Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes), who was arrested at the beginning of this episode. Hector tells Matt what happened. As Matt listens, he’s paying attention to Hector’s heartbeat and nerves to see if he’s telling the truth. Matt tells him that he’ll be his lawyer and help him. The cops aren’t telling the truth about what happened.

Fisk is on his way to the firehouse with his team and they get stuck in traffic because of a hole in the road. He exits the car and storms up to the foreman, demanding they fill the hole immediately. The foreman listens and they begin to take orders. Everyone starts to notice Fisk and take videos and pictures of him.

Matt and Kirsten (Nikki M. James) are at the courthouse with Hector, preparing for his initial bail hearing. As the hearing begins, the judge doesn’t let Matt speak, immediately giving Hector no bail.

BB Ulrich, a journalist, (Genneya Walton) meets Fisk in his office. She is the niece of Ben Ulrich, the newspaper journalist murdered by Fisk. They discuss the murder of the police officer and his current issues with the NYPD. The brief interview is cut short when BB asks Fisk about his wife, Vanessa.

Later, we see Fisk attend the funeral to talk to the Commissioner. The commissioner doesn’t like Fisk and wants to make his term a short one. After telling him he’s still the bad guy, he says, “See you around, Kingpin.”

Next, we see Cherry (Clark Johnson) and Kirsten at Hector’s home with his wife. They tell her that with Matt by Hector’s side, there’s a chance that the trial will end positively. Cherry leaves to check around the house while Kirsten talks to the wife. He finds a box underneath a bed. As he opens it, he finds a necklace with a tiger pendant and a white costume.

Matt gets a call from Cherry and learns Hector is White Tiger. He goes to the prison to confront Hector for keeping the secret from him. Hector doesn’t care if anyone else finds out because all he cares about is protecting the city.

Later, Fisk meets with the Commissioner. He resigns and tells Fisk to find someone else for the job and some new police officers. Before he leaves, Fisk shows him pictures of a woman and a little boy. They are the Commissioner’s mistress and son in Philadelphia. Fisk gives him the ultimatum, that either the Commissioner resigns and he lets the public know about his infidelity, or he’ll keep it a secret if he stays. The Commissioner decides to stay.

Matt and D.A. Hochberg meet with the judge to discuss the revelation that Hector is the White Tiger. The judge agrees with Matt that the jury should not know about any information regarding Hector being the White Tiger, so it does not affect their decision on whether Hector is guilty or not.

After this small victory, Matt follows the officer who arrested Hector home as Matt listens in, Heather calls to tell him that they’ll have to reschedule their date. Matt is relieved as he watches the officer’s home.

Meanwhile, Heather prepares for her next session. Her new clients are Fisk and Vanessa. They talk about Fisk’s absence and rehabilitation. Vanessa says that while he was gone, she was lonely. But, now that he’s back, she doesn’t know how to feel.

Matt hears the officer get a call about an address mentioned. It’s the apartment of Nicky Torres, the witness to the attack. Matt arrives before the police to warn Nicky. Matt tells him to go meet Cherry at a park while he takes care of the officers. The main officer has a tattoo with the Punisher logo and a Blue Lives Matter flag.

The two officers beat Matt before one of them points a gun at his head.  before he can pull the trigger, Matt fights them both, with bloody results.

Overall, this was a good episode and an interesting way to introduce another vigilante. Matt won’t be able to avoid being Daredevil if chaos like this continues to happen. Hector may have a chance to be proven innocent if Nicky listens to Matt and goes on the stand.  Fisk and Vanessa in therapy is an intriguing concept because their relationship is damaged by his time away. What will happen now that Matt had that fight with the officers?
