Review: ‘Cross’ Season 2, Episode 7 “Winnow”

Another riveting episode of Cross finds the team protecting the surviving members on Luz’s kill list. Alex and Kayla gather Nori, Griffith, Nat and Lance in a secure location to weigh their options.

Luz’s ultimatum is simple: each individual confess and give her $20 million, or else. Both Griffith and Nori rather submit to the demands, but Lance refuses to cooperate. He claims their chances of survival are better if they stick together. Matthew Lillard is amazing, firmly believing he is untouchable by the hands of justice. He’s able of displaying a level of narcissism underneath a belief that what he has done is a benefit to the world. Its a mode of white savior mentality that comes with the amount of wealth and power he’s been able to wield for decades.

Back in D.C., Momma Nana returns from her trip. She confronts Alex about Elle’s absence, and must make her case to John as to why she hid the truth about LaDonna. Isaiah Mustafa exhibits great emotional range in the scene, able to muster up an insecurity he’s dealt with his entire life. Living to prove he was worthy of love because of what he lacked. This season has done a great job at fleshing out the supporting cast’s narratives without overshadowing Cross as the lead.

We see this quality within Alona Tal’s story as Kayla. This season showed the focused, independent woman was more than her badge. Friction arises between her and Alex as he’s given full control over the investigation, making him Kayla’s boss. Alex denies this need to be in front, reminding Kayla that Chief Anderson and Director Henderson handed him the case. She reminds him that he didn’t decline the offer. Again, the show displays their similarities in regard to their profession, however Agent Craig has the glass ceiling of sexism preventing her from moving forward. Kayla also learns that the hunt for Mastermind was all a test, revealing that Margaret faked her death as she was Mastermind.

The penultimate episode was a great balance of the best of both worlds in Cross: quality action sequences and tension, paired with real-life human moments.
