Review: ‘Cross’ Season 2, Episode 6 “Gather”

Following developments in episode 5, Cross keeps the pace in “Gather,” as Alex and his team begin to piece together Luz’s master plan. Meanwhile, Kayla rendezvouses with a former colleague, and John has his doubts regarding his mother’s case.

A bandaged Alex returns to D.C., facing the heat of the FBI. Because of his rogue decision, Agent Roy seeks to remove him from the investigation. Fortunately, Lt. De Lackner and Chief Anderson advocate on his behalf. Later, a dedicated agent connects Cross to Senator Ashford. He shares about Luz’s visit and his mother’s connection to Lance Durand.

Cross discovers five names remain on Luz’s hit list — bringing the total to ten. After conferring with a professor of ancient cultures, they realize Luz has aligned her targets with the mythology of La Nina de la Flores. In the tale, a young woman must defeat 10 demons to save her people. Durand and his personal guard are the last two targets, which leaves the remaining three to identify.

Kayla takes a break from the case as she and Bobby kidnap Felicia, the woman behind the deepfake video. Kayla attempts to escape culpability, but Felicia holds a mirror to her, stating, “You’re not better than us.” She eventually coerces Felicia into revealing where the video footage is saved. She keeps her alive, for now, making sure her information is accurate.

John and Detective Vega ID the missing witness as Milo, who they find still injured from the bullet wound. In exchange for treatment, he tells them the shooter is “Nighttrain,” the street name for the man known as TK. After a moment down memory lane, John shares the name with LaDonna, who protests she doesn’t know him. He leaves it at that for now, but doubt about LaDonna’s story appears in his eyes.

Cross and Kayla realize the next target is Jelani Amadou, aka “The Architect” on Luz’s list. He was the brain behind the trafficking scheme. They attempt to warn him at his wedding, where Durand serves as his best man.

The episode was another solid entry, continuing the show’s improved writing and direction this season. The action is great without feeling too extreme or unrealistic. The inclusion of the cultural mythology was an interesting touch, revealing another layer of Luz as a particularly insightful and human antagonist. It again shows how grounded the season is compared to the typical serial killer story of the first.
