Episode 4 sees our main story escalate in Florida. Meanwhile, at home, the Cross family has a new houseguest, and John sets his bias aside to solve his mother’s case.
First, Cross and Agent Craig debrief on the fiasco that was the Texas operation that left Lincoln in the wind, and DHS Agent Larson dead. They discovered Larson was dirty, most likely working with the traffickers, and the agency suspected it. Cross and Craig cannot pursue the case any further without ruffling bureaucratic feathers.
Later, Luz, Donnie and her aunt welcome a new visitor, Lincoln. His years of detective work and piecing together clues bring him to her doorstep. They share notes as both have been aiming to take down Durand’s Crestbrook, just via different paths. Where Lincoln’s pursuit in the courts failed, Luz has found street justice. While Luz is amazed by his dedication, Donnie and her aunt remain hesitant, thinking his presence will draw unwanted attention.
Back in D.C., Roberto finally comes to the Cross household. While it feels a little simplistic for TV, the orphaned undocumented child now has an entire village watching out for him, including John. John sees parallels in his own story when he looks at Roberto. This drives him to begin investigating his mother’s murder case. However, facts from years ago don’t add up, signaling that LaDonna isn’t telling him the whole truth.
Cross and Kayla head to Florida after piecing together previous clues. They both realize what their gut had been telling them all along: Lincoln is not their killer. They figure someone else with similar motivations is targeting the billionaires.
This episode was strong, with an equal amount of escalation across our main storylines. The topic of immigration injects a dose of realism and relevance to the story and season, elevating it above the previous season’s narrative. Also, the way the series is mirroring our opposite duos — Alex and Kayla against Luz and Lincoln — is an interesting artistic choice. The individuals have more in common than they think. It will certainly bring about some interesting developments for the second half of the season.
