The second episode finds our protagonists chasing our murder suspect from the nation’s capital to the Windy City. As new developments emerge, Cross and Agent Kayla Craig begin to decipher a larger mystery. As this dynamic duo makes progress, Luz and Manny shift their plans to the next phase after personally dealing with Helvig.

We open the episode by witnessing more of Manny and Luz’s terror tactics to get what they want from targets. Luz is the brains behind the operation, while Manny appears menacing as her muscle. Luz’s thirst for blood is diabolical, but controlled and, in her eyes, perfectly logical. She finds justice in her actions, which makes it hard to root against her. Paired with her genuine concern for people who have been wronged, viewers are waiting on bated breath to see the next name on her list. This humanizes the character, making her more dimensional, a quality that was missing in season one’s villain.
Alex and Kayla also make a good pair, trusting each other’s instincts and complementing each other’s skillset. There is a reason Kayla is FBI — she can mentally spar with Alex, matching his wit and seeing the dots connect. Interestingly, we have these two couples on opposite sides of the law and moral spectrum this season.

And yet, there are areas of grey even in our heroes, which makes for a more compelling story. For instance, Alex faces a cold shoulder from John for withholding the truth about his mother. And, he continues his tug-of-war with Elle. Meanwhile, Kayla suffers a grave loss as she attempts to solve her Mastermind dilemma. The sudden blow drives her to a familiar and unpredictable resource.
The episode is another solid entry with an excellent action sequence that propels the story forward. The story is also enhanced by the slight mysticism that’s embedded in the plot. It will be interesting to see where the next episode takes us.
