Review: ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4, Episode 7 “The Beyond”

Previously on Netflix’s Bridgerton, Lady Penwood goes to the Bridgertons’ home to find Sophie, but has no luck. Sophie and Benedict spend more time together before deciding they shouldn’t see each other anymore. Sophie will leave to work for the Penwoods when the time comes. Francesca tragically finds her husband, John, dead in bed.

The episode begins with John’s funeral. Benedict has the honour of doing the eulogy.  Throughout the funeral, Francesca zones out with Michaela by her side the whole time. While Francesca is talking to Hyacinth, Sophie notices that Francesca is about to cry, so she takes her to her room. Sophie tells her about her father’s funeral to give her some comfort. After leaving Francesca’s room, Sophie finds Benedict outside. She tells him that it hurts her to see all of them hurt, especially him. She’s still planning on leaving the Bridgerton house at the end of the week.

Later at night, Francesca lashes out at Michaela after she suggests that they should celebrate John’s life. Later on, we find out that Francesca changes her mind and decides to work with Michaela for the celebration.

The next day, Francesca informs Eloise and Penelope that she is with child, but tells them to keep it under wraps for the time being. Meanwhile, Violet goes to visit Benedict, who lashes out at her, admitting to his mother that he loves Sophie.

Violet goes to Sophie, gently confronting her about her relations with Benedict. She asks Sophie if she’s running from something, but Sophie doesn’t tell her the truth.

Francesca has an examination to determine if she truly is pregnant, with Eloise and their mother by her side. They find out that she was wrong. Francesca admits to Violet that she feels guilty for not giving John the family he wanted. Francesca tells her that she can never feel how she’s feeling because Violet and her father were able to create a family. Francesca breaks down, and Michaela listens from the other side of the wall.

Violet apologizes to Benedict for how she has handled the situation with him and Sophie. She tells him that he should choose to marry her, to be with her, if that’s truly what he wants. She says, “If you marry Sophie, it will never change how much I love you, Benedict.”

The next morning, Posy sneaks out of the house and into Sophie’s quarters as she’s looking for her necklace. Posy runs over to her and hugs her. She warns Sophie about Lady Penwood’s goal of finding her. Posy tells her, “I would not have survived in that house without you,” meaning that Sophie was always so kind to her. Sophie tells her about a job opportunity in America that she’s considering. The two of them hug one last time before Posy departs.

Lady Penwood manipulates Posy into telling her about Sophie’s plans to go to America.  Posy hopes the news will end her mother’s search for Sophie.

Michaela and Francsca host the celebration at the Kilmartin house. Meanwhile, Sophie is packing her things. Benedict rushes to the house to propose to Sophie. He finds her necklace in his bedroom. He realizes the necklace was on the mystery woman, and he learns that she is the one he has been looking for all this time. Before Sophie can exit the house, she gets arrested.

Overall, this was an emotional yet great episode. Hannah Dodd and Isabella Wei both did an incredible job in this episode. Dodd’s portrayal as Francesca has been beautiful throughout the season and especially in this episode, with her emotional moments and her grieving. We learn more about Isabella Wei’s character, Posy, as she has a heart-to-heart moment with Sophie. It was heartwarming to see the two of them being soft and kind to each other. Now that Sophie has been arrested, what will happen? Will Benedict be able to find her?
